The Side-Force Problem for Shallow Helicoidal Shells

Journal of Applied Mechanics, 1969
The side-force problem for a shallow helicoidal shell is shown to be the complete static-geometric analog of the pure bending problem for the same shell. The solution of the former in terms of elementary functions is obtained, without another set of independent calculations, simply by applying the rules of the static-geometric duality to that of the ...

CFD modelling of shell-side asphaltenes deposition in a shell and tube heat exchanger

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2017
Asphaltenes are identified as the main cause of crude oil fouling in the shell and tube exchangers. There are occasions where the crude oil flows through the shell side of the heat exchangers and some fouling is reported in the shell side of those heat exchangers.

Two-Phase Flow on the Shell Side of a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

2010 14th International Heat Transfer Conference, Volume 4, 2010
Two-phase flow on the shell side of a shell and tube heat exchanger is complex. Several studies have produced flow pattern maps that show surprising differences in flow regime boundaries for data sets that contain relatively small variations in fluid and flow properties.

Measurement and prediction of evaporator shell-side pressure drop

International Journal of Refrigeration, 2005
Abstract The pressure drop across a heat exchanger is an important parameter, along with the heat transfer capacity. In fact, the operating cost throughout the life of the exchanger depends on the pressure losses. Therefore, it is important to be able to predict pressure drop accurately as it is to predict heat transfer. A new data set of shell-side

Numerical Analysis of Shell-Side Fluid Flow in Shell-and-Tube Heat Exchanger

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2015
This work presents velocity field and flow resistance analysis on shell-side of shell-and-tube heat exchanger. Numerical investigations have been carried out using a finite volume method implemented in ANSYS Fluent code. In case of heat exchangers with a great number of tubes in bundle, the finite volume method numerical model representing real ...

Shell-side boiling of water at sub-atmospheric pressures

International Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer, 2015
Abstract Experimental data are reported for water boiling at pressures of 850 and 50 mbar absolute on the shell-side of a model industrial boiler slice. The boiler test section was 1 m high, 0.75 m wide and contained 36 electrically heated tubes. The tubes were 28.5 mm in diameter and 98 mm long.

Selecting Shell Side Design Temperature for Feedwater Heaters

Volume 1: Fuels and Combustion, Material Handling, Emissions; Steam Generators; Heat Exchangers and Cooling Systems; Turbines, Generators and Auxiliaries; Plant Operations and Maintenance; Reliability, Availability and Maintainability (RAM); Plant Systems, Structures, Components and Materials Issues, 2014
Operating temperature information was gathered using thermocouples installed on the outside of an existing high pressure feedwater heater (FWH). The operating data was collected to demonstrate the basis for the evaluation of the operational effectiveness of the heater especially during rapid load changes.

Residual Compressive Strength of Dented FPSO Side Shell Panel

Volume 4B: Structures, Safety and Reliability, 2014
This paper presents a non-linear finite element study to obtain the ultimate compressive strength of dented FPSO side stiffened panels. The finite element program ABAQUS was used to perform numerical analysis. The analysis is carried out in two steps. First the supply collision damage is imposed using the ABAQUS explicit code program.

Simulation of Shell-Side Performance of Novel Heat Exchanger

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012
Numerical simulation of shell-and-tube heat exchangers with novel helical baffles was carried out by using commercial codes to study shell-side flow and heat transfer characteristics. The results show that compared with shell-and-tube heat exchangers with conventional helical baffles, the ones with novel helical baffles can efficiently reduce the ...

Time-domain fatigue assessment of ship side-shell structures

International Journal of Fatigue, 2013
Loads acting on ship side-shell structures are complex and vary randomly over time. The current study proposes a direct calculation procedure for the fatigue assessment of ship side-shell structures. The calculation procedure is characterised by nonlinear time-domain hydrodynamic simulations followed by finite element (FE) analyses.
