Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone Stimulation Tests in the Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)

open access: yesJournal of Zoological and Botanical Gardens, 2021
Stimulation of the thyroid with thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) is a potentially useful diagnostic of thyroid dysfunction, but little is known about the response of the thyroid to TSH stimulation in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

The Use of a Shelter Software a to Track Frequency and Selected Risk Factors for Feline Upper Respiratory Infection

open access: yesAnimals, 2015
Objective—Feline upper respiratory infection (URI) is a common, multi-factorial infectious disease syndrome endemic to many animal shelters. Although a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in shelter cats, URI is seldom formally monitored in ...

Modification of the Feline-Ality™ Assessment and the Ability to Predict Adopted Cats’ Behaviors in Their New Homes

open access: yesAnimals, 2015
It is estimated that 2.5 million cats enter animal shelters in the United States every year and as few as 20% leave the shelter alive. Of those adopted, the greatest risk to post-adoption human animal bond is unrealistic expectations set by the adopter.

A Pentaradial and Bilateral Combined Photoreception System in the Sea Cucumber is Mediated by a Blue Light‐Sensitive R‐Opsin

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The sea cucumber Holothuria leucospilota detects blue and adjacent wavelengths of light via an r‐opsin with a maximum absorption at 459 nm. In the oral tentacles, papillae, and tube feet, distinct light‐sensing structures with specialized morphologies are formed, constituting a unique pentaradial and bilateral combined photoreception system.

3D Printed Meter‐Scale Soft Origami Robots Capable of Load‐Bearing Actuation Via Crease Stiffness Modulation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Origami has inspired numerous soft deployable mechanisms for safe human‐robot interaction, while its intrinsic kinematic instability at arbitrary configurations limited their practical robotic application. This work presents a 3D printed meter‐scale origami robotic actuator capable of load‐bearing deformation through creaseline stiffness modulation.
