Analysis of the Shimmy Phenomenon
The shimmy phenomenon has been treated as a non-linear problem which is solved using the method of equivalent linearization and also with the aid of an analogue computer. Three non-linear elements are considered: the tyre characteristics, the Coulomb friction in the king-pin bearings, and clearance in the wheel bearings. The theory is substantiated by

Shimmy is the phenomenon of intensive angular self-excited vibrations of a vehicle wheel. Such self-excited vibrations seriously threaten the safety ofmotion, which explains scientists’ profound interest in this phenomenon. This problem is most serious for the front wheels of aircraft.

Experimental investigation on the shimmy phenomenon
The dynamic behavior of motorcycles, in terms of out of plane vibration modes, is strongly influenced by relative oscillations that can arise between the front and rear frames around the steering axis. When idealizing behavior for a rear frame mass which is very large compared with the front frame, the shimmy phenomenon takes place. This paper presents

A Stability Analysis of the Wheel Shimmy
Volume 1: Advanced Computational Mechanics; Advanced Simulation-Based Engineering Sciences; Virtual and Augmented Reality; Applied Solid Mechanics and Material Processing; Dynamical Systems and Control, 2012The wheel shimmy is a classical non-linear problem. The most frequently used approach to study this phenomena is based on linearized low degree of freedom models, that from one side, thanks the simplicity of the equations of the motion, allows to evaluate the stability with classical stability-analysis approach, but from the other side it limits the ...

Wheel Shimmy Experimental Investigation
Volume 1: Advanced Computational Mechanics; Advanced Simulation-Based Engineering Sciences; Virtual and Augmented Reality; Applied Solid Mechanics and Material Processing; Dynamical Systems and Control, 2012This paper presents a test rig adopted for a basic investigation on the shimmy phenomenon that, even if with some differences, characterizes the dynamic behavior of many mechanical systems such as aircraft landing gear, motorcycles, towed vehicles, etc..

<div class="htmlview paragraph">Shimmying, although known for many years, did not become a serious problem until the arrival of the balloon tire and the four-wheel brake. Apparently, shimmying is of two kinds: the low-speed variety, which is merely a persistent front-wheel wabble without an abnormal bouncing of the axle, and the high-speed ...

Parametric shimmy of a nosegear
Journal of Aircraft, 1970Thus, the theoretical two-dimensional time-dependent solution, Eq. (9), has been tested as a description of the viscous cross flow for large fineness ratio bodies approximating circular cylinders at moderate angles of attack. Some agreement has been obtained, although empirical procedures are still required and the region of applicability is narrow ...

Study on steering wheel shimmy with clearance of kingpin
The non-linear factors of tyre lateral force and contact-impact force of kingpin clearance are considered in this paper. They are brought in the shimmy model by the tyre magic formula and dynamic model of a two-state clearance mechanism.

The shimmy, also known as the shim-me-sha-wabble, is a jazz dance that features the upper body, especially the shoulders, shaking and quivering horizontally from side to side, such that a dancer’s ‘chemise’ might shift and slide. The dance, often associated with female sexuality, rose to mass popularity in the United States in the late 1910s and early ...
