Numerical evaluation of wind direction effects on the turbulence aerodynamics of a ship airwake [PDF]
The airwake characteristics around a ship body are an important consideration for helicopter pilots during shipboard operations, as airwake can lead to the formation of massively turbulent flow over the ship deck.

Space-Time Characterization of Ship Airwakes
AIAA Journal, 2023The turbulent airwakes produced by a generic navy frigate (Simple Frigate Ship 2) was investigated in a low-speed wind tunnel. The frigate model was subjected to a headwind and immersed in a simulated atmospheric boundary layer. High-speed stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (PIV) was performed at six different spanwise planes over the flight deck.

Effect of ship motion on ship airwake aerodynamics
2020The effects of ship motion on the flow field over the deck of the ONR Tumblehome geometry were investigated experimentally. Characterization of the flow field is relevant in the context of safe aircraft operation in the wake region and to provide an accurate prediction of aircraft air-loads in simulators for pilots, and to provide a validation data set

Ship Airwake Analysis by CFD Methods
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2007This study is concerned with computational predictions of the highly unsteady turbulent airwake of nonaviation ships. This is the first step in studying complex flow field of fully coupled helicopter/ship interaction. Numerical simulations carried out in this study are performed by using commercial CFD solver CFX 10.0 and FLUENT 6.2.16.

Grid Generation and Airwake Simulation on Ship
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012Dynamic characteristics of flow field on the ship deck are complex. CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) results of LHA ship were verified the accuracy of numerical simulation through compared with the experimental data. Three different grids were generated to discuss and analyze the influence of the prismatic layer grid.

Ship Airwake Sensitivities to Modeling Parameters
43rd AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2005** * † Accurate models for the prediction of ship airwake flowfields are critical to the development of realistic flight simulation tools for aircraft carrier launch and recovery operations. The accurate computation of the ship airwake can be very challenging due to the complexity of the ship geometry, the size of and difficulty in generating a ...

Airwake simulations on an LPD 17 ship
15th AIAA Computational Fluid Dynamics Conference, 2001The flow over the San Antonio class LPD 17 ship is simulated using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and parallel computers. Both steady-state and time-accurate results are presented for two yaw cases. The computations are done for inviscid flow with no turbulence modeling.

Velocity Measurements in A Ship Airwake With Crosswind
42nd AIAA Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2012In situ air velocity measurements in the near wake of a Navy training ship are presented for an inflow of 15 to starboard. This data is required for the validation of ship airwake simulations, which are used to determine the launch and recovery envelopes for shipborne rotorcraft and for use in piloted flight simulations.
