Near Term Ship Motion Forecasting From Prior Motion
Volume 1B, Symposia: Fluid Mechanics (Fundamental Issues and Perspectives; Industrial and Environmental Applications); Multiphase Flow and Systems (Multiscale Methods; Noninvasive Measurements; Numerical Methods; Heat Transfer; Performance); Transport Phenomena (Clean Energy; Mixing; Manufacturing and Materials Processing); Turbulent Flows — Issues and Perspectives; Algorithms and Applications for High Performance CFD Computation; Fluid Power; Fluid Dynamics of Wind Energy; Marine Hydrodynamics, 2016Ship-motion forecasting can be useful for naval operations such as aircraft landing, cargo transfer, off-loading of small boats, and ship “mating” between a large transport ship and smaller ships. The forecasted ship motion is particularly useful in sea states above SS3 when unanticipated large motions can suddenly occur.

Effect of ship motion on ship airwake aerodynamics
2020The effects of ship motion on the flow field over the deck of the ONR Tumblehome geometry were investigated experimentally. Characterization of the flow field is relevant in the context of safe aircraft operation in the wake region and to provide an accurate prediction of aircraft air-loads in simulators for pilots, and to provide a validation data set

A ship motion simulation system
Virtual Reality, 2008In this article, efficient computational models for ship motions are presented. These models are used to simulate ship movements in real time. Compared with traditional approaches, our method possesses the ability to cope with different ship shapes, engines, and sea conditions without the loss of efficiency. Based on our models, we create a ship motion

Real Time Ship Motion Estimation
OCEANS 92 Proceedings@m_Mastering the Oceans Through Technology, 2005The problem of real time estimation of ship mo- tions is consided. The problem is viewed as a nonlinear adaptive estimation problem for partially unknown time- varying linear systems with non-Gaussian initial conditions. The adaptive Lainiotis partitiong approach is applied and com- parisons are made with the Kalman filter.

AbstractThe ship capsizing problem is one of the major challenges in naval architecture. The criterion of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regarding capsize stability is still not including dynamic loads. Existing mathematical models of ships taking into account all degrees of freedom as well as fluid–structure–interaction can hardly be ...

ABSTRACT When operating large ships in water depths only slightly greater than the draft, as super tankers at near-shore terminals, it is necessary to know precisely how much clearance is required for safety. Recent developments in hydrodynamics are applied to determine the motions of a ship due to waves and current

Homoclinic Phenomena in Ship Motions
Journal of Ship Research, 2017In the article will be reviewed the changes of ship motion patterns originating from a special class of phase space phenomena identified in the nonlinear dynamics literature as homoclinic (When the term appears in italic, it will imply truly homoclinic as well as heteroclinic events).

The problem discussed concerns small motions of a ship, in all six degrees of freedom, but at zero speed of advance, due to an incident wave system in shallow water of depth comparable with the ship's draft. The problem is completely formulated for an arbitrary ship, and is partially solved for the case when the ship is slender and the wavelength much ...

Ship motion measurement filter design
IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 1977A procedure is presented for designing Kalman filters to measure linear and angular ship motion parameters using realistic models of the ship motion dynamics. The design is based on the state space modeling of ship motion dynamics. The designed filters exhibited significant accuracy improvement (order of magnitude) over filters which do not model ship ...
