Waves and Ships

Journal of Navigation, 1965
One of the most general topics mentioned in discussion at the Institute's lectures, in its Technical Committee, and during meetings with other Institutes, is the extent to which automation can help in navigation; and it seems rather unfortunate that the question should so often be examined purely from the viewpoint of whether it will reduce the cost of

Diffraction of ship-type waves

Fluid Dynamics, 1971
The family of progressive waves propagating along the surface of a heavy liquid contains not only the simple waves which are usually studied but also waves of very complex structure, which in form are reminiscent of the crests of ship-generated waves. These waves are defined by formulas which contain an arbitrary function of a single argument.

On Kelvin's ship-wave pattern

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1960
When a concentrated pressure travels with constant velocity over the free surface of water, it carries with it a familiar pattern of ship waves. Let viscosity and surface tension be neglected, let the free-surface condition be linearized, let the depth of water be assumed infinite, and let initial transient effects be ignored.

Simplified Theory of Ship Waves

American Journal of Physics, 1957
The physical significance of group velocity is considered critically and a general and realistic definition given. This is used to develop a simple phenomenological theory of the ship wave pattern including the prediction of phase changes at singularities, and the variation of the wave-making resistance of a ship with speed is shown to be governed in a

Numerical Simulation of Ship-Ship Interactions in Waves

Volume 2: CFD and FSI, 2019
Abstract A numerical simulation of the hydrodynamic interaction and attitude of a ship and two ships of different sizes navigating in parallel in waves were carried out in this paper. The study of the two ships navigating in parallel is of great significance in marine replenishment.

Far-Field Ship Waves

Ship Technology Research, 2006
The wave field of ships computed by a Rankine panel method is ‘extrapolated’ up to large distances from the ship. For deep water or shallow water of constant depth, a Fourier analysis of the waves within a small ‘analysis rectangle’ allows to determine the waves at other locations where the linear free-surface condition holds.

Numerical Analysis and Experimental Validation of Added Resistance on Ship in Waves

Journal of Ship Research, 2019
In this study, the added resistance of a liquefied natural gas carrier (LNGC) in the presence of waves is studied experimentally and numerically. The ship model is an LNGC designed by Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).

CFD Computation of Wave Forces and Motions of DTC Ship in Oblique Waves

International Journal of Offshore and Polar Engineering, 2018
Numerical simulations of the Duisburg Test Case (DTC) ship free to heave, roll, and pitch motions in oblique waves are presented. The computations are carried out by an in-house computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver, naoe-FOAM-SJTU, based on volume ...

Wave Models In Ship Design

Seakeeping and Weather, 1995
Design for service of ships and structures requires a coherent description of the anticipated wind and wave climate. Based on concepts and empirical relations underlying a second generation wind-wave model the paper describes a concise and yet complete description of a wind and wave climate which seems particularly useful in early stages of the design.
