The trade route between Manila and Mexico was a monopoly of the Spanish Crown for more than 250 years. The Manila Galleons were ``the richest ships in all the oceans'', but much of the wealth sank at sea and remain undiscovered. We introduce a newly constructed dataset of all of the ships that travelled this route.

This paper is the result of a research that was carried out by the author at the University of Groningen, and of which the preliminary results were presented at the International Symposium on Boat and Ship Archaeology 13. The main objective of the research was to provide spatial information on the distribution of shipwrecks in the province of Flevoland.

The recently discovered literary papyrus P.Mil.Vogl. VIII 309 reveals that, in ancient times, epitaphs for those drowned at sea formed an independent epigrammatic category and not a mere subgenre of funerary epigram as we have hitherto been used to think, in keeping with the Byzantine Greek Anthology.
