Locating short-circuit faults in underground networks
2011 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting, 2011In power distribution networks, impedance short-circuit faults are hard to detect in their incipient stage, as the fault currents may not be large enough to trip circuit breakers. In this paper, we summarize our research activities in short-circuit fault localization in underground power distribution networks. First, a simulation testbed was built.

A Comprehensive Analysis of Short-Circuit Current Behavior in PMSM Interturn Short-Circuit Faults
IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics, 2018This paper presents a detailed analysis of short-circuit current behavior during interturn short-circuit faults in permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) by considering the short-circuit contact resistance. For this purpose, an finite element analysis (FEA)-based equivalent circuit model is developed to understand the circulating current ...

A novel fault detection circuit for short-circuit faults of IGBT
2011 Twenty-Sixth Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition (APEC), 2011This paper proposed a novel fault detection circuit comparing the gate voltage of IGBT. The proposed scheme is operated to protect IGBT under short-circuit faults such as hard switch-fault (HSF). The proposed circuit consists of two parts. One is the difference generator which generates a difference between a gate voltage and an input voltage.

Motor Contribution During Three-Phase Short Circuit Fault
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 1982One of the major factors to be considered in selecting the ratings of electrical equipment (circuit breakers, bus bar bracing, etc.) is the level of three-phase short circuit current available at the equipment location in the system. The total three-phase short circuit current at a faulted point includes both the currents from the power source (such as

Research on Ignition Characteristic of Short-Circuit Fault
Advanced Materials Research, 2013Under voltage of 220V, this article has carried out ignition test of three categories of combustible substance including polyurethane foam, cotton cloth and newspaper by simulation of short-circuit fault of aluminum conducting wire, so as to get the characteristic parameters of ignition of combustible substance due to short-circuit bead at different ...

Synchronous Generator Short-Circuit and System Faults
1975Although the majority of the faults occurring in practice on a power system are unsymmetrical between the phases, the symmetrical fault is important because, although rarer, it is more severe. It is, moreover, a simpler condition to analyse, and therefore forms a suitable starting-point for a study of fault conditions.

PM Synchronous Machine Drive Response to Asymmetrical Short-Circuit Faults
IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications, 2014This paper investigates the impact of machine topology and parameters on the fault-mode characteristics of permanent-magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) exposed to asymmetrical short-circuit (ASC) faults, one of the most dangerous faults in terms of peak current amplitudes and demagnetization risks.

Short Circuit Studies in Transmission Networks Using Improved Fault Model
2007 IEEE Lausanne Power Tech, 2007Accuracy of short circuit analysis depends on the fault modelling. This paper addresses the implementation of a new fault model consisted of a serial connection of the tower footing resistance and arc resistance. In existing approaches the value of the arc resistance at the fault location must be known in advance, or it is totally neglected from the ...

Remedial Operations of Permanent Magnet Fault Tolerant Motor for Short-Circuit Fault
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, 2013Abstract Due to their concentrated windings and modular topology, permanent-magnet fault-tolerant (PMFT) motors inherently offer decoupling phases and fault-tolerant capability. Two fault-tolerant drive topologies for these motors, namely H-bridge and star-connection, are presented and compared for short-circuit fault.
