Cadmium phytoextraction using short-rotation coppice Salix: the evidence trail

open access: yesEnvironment International, 2005
A substantial body of evidence has now accumulated that raises expectations that clean-up of Cd-contaminated land can be achieved through cultivation and harvest of selected clones of short-rotation coppice willow within a realistic crop lifecycle.

Char Layer Thickness Evolution During Structural Timber Fire Experiment and Final Density Profile

open access: yesFire and Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper evaluates several non‐destructive experimental methods for determining the char layer thickness and its density profile in structural timber samples exposed to standard ISO 834 fire curve experiments. Microwave echo pulse, ultrasonic echo pulse, X‐ray computed tomography, and resistance drilling were evaluated.

Biofilm removal capacity and titanium surface integrity in non‐abrasive versus abrasive peri‐implantitis cleaning interventions

open access: yesJournal of Periodontology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Current peri‐implantitis treatment methods are modeled after dental cleaning modalities like abrasive surface cleaning. However, mechanical abrasive cleaning not only inadequately removes implant biofilms but also compromises implant surface integrity with adverse biological effects.

Mechanical Reinforcement of Polymer Nanocomposites with Different Network Structure of Polymer Grafted Nanoparticles

open access: yesMacromolecular Materials and Engineering, EarlyView.
Due to the different conformation structures of the grafting chains on the surface of silica, the nanoparticles contact each other by brush chains and bridge into a polymer‐mediated nanoparticle network in HDPE14K/HDPE1K‐g‐SiO2 PNCs, resulting in a more significant modulus reinforcement than that of PP370K/PP90K‐g‐SiO2 PNCs with a soft interfacial ...

Comparison of soil CO2 emissions between short-rotation coppice poplar stands and arable lands

open access: yesiForest - Biogeosciences and Forestry, 2018
Bioenergy crops are considered to have the potential for climate mitigation and socio-economic benefits owing to their capacity to sequester C and partially replace the consumption of fossil fuels.

Recent Progress in Treating Airway Mucus Hypersecretion by Targeting the Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Signaling Pathway

open access: yesPediatric Discovery, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Asthma, chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD), cystic fibrosis, and acute respiratory infections are severe respiratory conditions that significantly contribute to global morbidity and mortality. Airway mucus hypersecretion is an important common pathophysiological and clinical manifestation of these diseases and is closely associated ...

Susceptibility of Phthorimaea absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) to novel and established insecticides in Brazil: resistance survey, baseline, and implications for management

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Baseline susceptibility of Phthorimaea absoluta to novel insecticides isocycloseram and tolfenpyrad was established in Brazil. Diagnostic doses were proposed for early resistance detection. Early tolfenpyrad tolerance and abamectin‐driven cross‐tolerance to isocycloseram via oxidases highlight cross‐resistance risks, emphasizing the need for routine ...

SDEWES 2023: Barriers and Possibilities for the Development of Short-Rotation Coppice as an Agroforestry System for Adaptation to Climate Change in Central European Conditions

open access: yesEnergies
This article compares different production, economic, and selected environmental aspects of agroforestry systems in a standard (alley cropping) and a newly proposed design with fast-growing trees grown in short-rotation coppice.

Control failure risk, resistance and enzymatic activity of neurotoxic insecticides in Brazilian populations of Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae)

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Bioassays of 36 Leucoptera coffeella populations revealed resistance to neurotoxic insecticides, control failures of ≤62.9% and enzyme activity variation, with particularly high GST and low AChE levels. Abstract Background Leucoptera coffeella is a key pest of coffee crops in Brazil, causing significant damage by mining coffee leaves.

Highly Dynamic Soft Electrohydraulic Origami Actuators for Agile and Multimodal Robotic Locomotion

open access: yesSmartBot, EarlyView.
Most current soft robots still lag far behind their natural counterparts in both agility and speed, mainly attributed to the limited morphing modes and performance of soft actuators. Here, the authors report a new methodology of electrohydraulic origami (EHO) for creating powerful and multimodal soft actuators with large strain, high speed, lightweight,
