Past, present and future of local crop evolution

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Promoting agrobiodiversity is a promising strategy for mitigating the negative effects of climate change on global food security. We highlight the central role evolutionary processes play in harnessing the potential of local crops by integrating genomics, archaeology, ethnobotany and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).

The role of mesoscale weather effects in simulating pyroconvection: A case study of the Santa Coloma de Queralt wildfire

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
This large‐eddy simulation study on pyroconvection shows that the added value from resolving the mesoscale explicitly is found in the timing of pyrocumulus formation and circulation changes. The circulation of the convective plume itself is not substantially different between the simulations. Abstract Extreme wildfire events are characterised by strong

Further development of adaptive parameter tuning in the numerical weather prediction models of Deutscher Wetterdienst

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
The introduction of adaptive parameter tuning in the numerical weather prediction models of DWD in 2022 substantially improved the forecast quality of near‐surface variables like 2‐m temperature and 2‐m humidity. Since 2023, refinements and extensions, primarily affecting the surface evaporation and its diurnal cycle, have led to further advances ...

From Flybys to Sample Return: A Review of Space Probes and Robotic Sampling Technologies for Small Bodies

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As a crucial puzzle piece of deep space exploration, exploring small bodies can provide significant scientific insights and valuable mineral resources. Unlike missions to the Moon and Mars, small‐body missions pose distinct technical challenges, including communication delays, weak gravity, and uncertain environments. This paper reviews a full

Automated Lawn Maintenance: An Agronomic and Operational Review of Turf Health, Biodiversity, and Field Performance

open access: yesJournal of Field Robotics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Grass mowing is one of the most resource‐consuming activities in green maintenance, whether in private areas such as home gardens or in public spaces like urban parks. In recent years, concerns related to climate change, human health, and sustainability have become increasingly prominent in green maintenance, leading manufacturers and industry

Environmental Stressors Influence Spatial Complexity in a Fluvial Macrophyte meadow

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
This research investigates the nonlinear relationships between environmental stressors and the fine‐scale spatial complexity of a fluvial macrophytes meadow. The use of multivariate spatial analysis allowed us to identify two major environmental gradients (nutrients and light) and two major complexity gradients (related to abundance and fragmentation).

Widespread Bomb Fishing in Indo‐Pacific Archipelago Revealed Through Machine Learning Accelerated Passive Acoustic Monitoring

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
AI‐accelerated passive acoustic monitoring reveals extensive bomb fishing within the Spermonde Archipelago, with annual incidents numbering in the thousands. ABSTRACT Bomb fishing is recognised as the most destructive fishing practice that can be performed in our oceans.

Digital Twin‐Based Optimization of Service Availability in LEO Mega Constellations Considering Handover Delays in Open RAN

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT As non‐terrestrial networks (NTNs) become integral to future 6G systems, ensuring seamless connectivity and service continuity over low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellations is essential. This work investigates the impact of open radio access network (RAN) functional splits on handover performance in NTNs, focusing on minimizing service ...

Insights From the Alphasat Aldo Paraboni Experiment at Tito Scalo and Spino d'Adda: Characterizing Scintillation and Rain Attenuation at Ka‐ and Q‐Band Frequencies

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We present experimental results on the relationship between rain attenuation and simultaneous scintillation during rain events, based on beacon signal measurements at 19.7 (Ka‐band) and 39.4 GHz (Q‐band) from the geosynchronous Alphasat satellite (25° E), received at two Italian ground stations, Spino d'Adda (42.1° slant path) and Tito Scalo ...

Directive Antenna Clutter Loss in Slant Paths

open access: yesInternational Journal of Satellite Communications and Networking, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper investigates the development of a clutter loss model specifically for slant paths involving directive antennas. Conventionally, clutter loss is characterized by using isotropic antennas to facilitate standard link budget calculations via single antenna gain values.
