Shoshin Beriberi With Severe Metabolic Acidosis

Southern Medical Journal, 1981
A case of Shoshin beriberi found in a patient with severe metabolic acidosis and shock was presented. We believe the metabolic acidosis in this case is ascribable to overproduction of pyruvate and lactate resulting from lack of thiamine due to preferential intake of sake, precooked food, and rice, and also to shock.

Shoshin Beriberi: An Unusual Complication of Prolonged Parenteral Nutrition

Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, 1986
After 4 weeks of total parenteral nutrition (TPN), a 12‐yr‐old girl exhibited an acute heart failure with high cardiac output, anuria, and severe lactic acidosis. The clinical, hemodynamic, and biological data suggested the diagnosis of shoshin beriberi which was proved by the low erythrocyte transketolase activity with elevated “TPP effect” and by the

[Shoshin beriberi with hyponatremia in a beer drinker].

Presse medicale (Paris, France : 1983), 1987
Shoshin beriberi - a fulminant form of cardiovascular beriberi - and severe hyponatraemia were observed concomitantly in a heavy beer drinker. Hyponatraemia due to water overload and not to sodium deficiency is not a feature of the true beer drinker syndrome. Cardiogenic shock with major lactic acidosis developed.

[Shoshin beriberi. A rapidly curable hemodynamic disaster].

Presse medicale (Paris, France : 1983), 1996
Shoshin beriberi, a uncommon cause of hemodynamic instability (or cardiac shock) and acute heart failure may go undiagnosed in Western countries where prevalence is low. This severe heart condition due to thiamine deficiency is rapidly fatal unless specific therapy is given. The most frequent cause in France is chronic alcoholism. There are no specific
