The behavior of power-law shot noise, for which the associated impulse response functions assume a decaying power-law form, is explored. Expressions are obtained for the moments, moment generating functions, amplitude probability density functions, autocorrelation functions, and power spectral densities for a variety of parameters of the process.

Microwatt shot-noise measurement
Applied Optics, 1995We report a simple scheme for sensitive measurements of optical-noise spectra. Optical noise is separated from electronic noise when the output of an analog spectrum analyzer is real-time squared and then lock-in detected. This method directly yields the desired mean-square noise voltage, i.e., the power spectrum of the optical noise on a linear scale.

Shot noise in radiobiological systems
Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, 2016As a model for human tissue, this report considers the rate of free radical generation in a dilute solution of water in which a beta-emitting radionuclide is uniformly dispersed. Each decay dissipates a discrete quantity of energy, creating a large number of free radicals in a short time within a small volume determined by the beta particle range ...

It is well known that electronic amplifiers introduce noise. The noise can be heard in any radio receiver tuned between stations. Some of the noise comes from the environment, but most of the noise is generated internally in the amplifiers. One source of amplifier noise is the shot noise that accompanies a flow of electric current.

A theoretical treatment of electrical noise originating from the discontinuous movement of ions through pore-like channels in a membrane is given. Two simple models are considered, a port with a single energy barrier and a pore with a single binding site separated from the aqueous solutions by energy barriers on either side.

Shot noise and thermal-equilibrium noise are often, and incorrectly, viewed as additive and independent noise sources. The two forms of noise can even be identical, as recognized by several pionering investigators long ago. Shot noise measures the graininess of the conduction process, and in samples with a fixed number of carriers, where the mean free ...

Some of the distributions encountered in Chapters 3–9 appear in a natural way as shot-noise distributions, i.e., as marginal distributions of shot-noise processes. This final short chapter is devoted to that topic.
