Evaluating Energy Absorption Performance of Filled Lattice Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Maximum stress must be considered to robustly evaluate energy absorber designs. This approach was applied to compare all types of absorbers in a single Ashby diagram and determine the utility of filling lattice voids with a second material. High‐performance fillers can improve the performance of lattices that are limited by buckling or catastrophic ...

Trustworthy deep learning for the automated quantification of the fatty infiltration of the rotator cuff muscles using magnetic resonance imaging

open access: yesJSES International
Background: The current method of classifying fatty infiltration is highly subjective and has low reliability, which may impact the decision-making for the management of rotator cuff tears. The purpose of this study was to present and evaluate a new deep-

COMPARISON OF KINEMATICS AND ACCURACY OF OVERHAND AMERICAN FOOTBALL THROWING [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
This study examined elbow angle, wrist velocity and throwing accuracy during American Football throws. Six repetitions of three types of throws: Self-selected pass (SS), Lob pass (L), and a Bullet pass (B); were performed to hit a point scaled target ...

Raman Spectroscopic Identification of Oxide Phases in a Corroded MgO–Steel Composite Anode Used in Aluminum Molten Salt Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Micro‐Raman spectroscopy is applied to characterize corrosion products in a recycled‐based MgO–316L steel composite anode after molten salt electrolysis. A depth‐dependent Fe–O/Fe–Al–O layer sequence of magnetite, hercynite, and an Al‐doped magnetite transition zone is identified.

A Preoperative Educational Video Improves Patient Satisfaction and Perceived Knowledge, but Not Patient Understanding for Total Shoulder Arthroplasty: A Randomized, Surgeon-Blinded Study

open access: yesJournal of Shoulder and Elbow Arthroplasty, 2018
Background The complexity of total joint arthroplasty warrants significant patient counseling, and some surgeons are utilizing multimedia to aid in preoperative education.

Critical shoulder angle combined with age predict five shoulder pathologies: a retrospective analysis of 1000 cases

open access: yesBMC Musculoskeletal Disorders, 2017
Background Acromial morphology has previously been defined as a risk factor for some shoulder pathologies. Yet, study results are inconclusive and not all major shoulder diseases have been sufficiently investigated. Thus, the aim of the present study was

Structural precursor to freezing: An integral equation study

open access: yes, 2008
Recent simulation studies have drawn attention to the shoulder which forms in the second peak of the radial distribution function of hard-spheres at densities close to freezing and which is associated with local crystalline ordering in the dense fluid ...

Impact of Sustainable Binders Based on Lignin and Collagen on the Volume Stability and Mechanical Properties of MgO‐C Refractories with MgO‐C Recyclates

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Collagen hydrolysate is evaluated as a sustainable binder for MgO‐C refractories. Its thermally induced cross‐linking and gas release lead to expansion and cracking in large bricks, but tailored batches with lignin, recyclates, or fine graphite improve the gas release while thermal treatment and stability.

Why Fox stands ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with the USA in Afghanistan [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Britain’s battered military mission in Afghanistan badly needed a shot in the arm. Morgan Roach heard Liam Fox making a clearcut case to a conservative thinktank in Washington on the rationale for continued intervention and on the trajectory for future ...
