Shoulder impingement is the most common diagnosis for shoulder pain. Shoulder impingement syndrome has been scrutinized as a misleading "umbrella" term, due to its vague and nonspecific context. It is better subcategorized into subacromial, internal, and subcoracoid impingement. The evaluation and treatment algorithm for each is grossly similar.

Impingement syndrome is an ill-defined term for a variety of disorders of the shoulder that manifest as anterior shoulder pain, especially during overhead activities. These disorders each have a common pathologic course that includes rotator cuff tendinitis (RCT), and, if untreated, may proceed to cuff rupture. RCT has at least two distinct etiologies.

Subacromial impingement syndrome is a common cause of shoulder pain. The purpose of this article is to review the clinical presentation, physical examination findings, and differential diagnosis of impingement syndrome. Using an evidence-based approach, we propose an algorithm for the management of subacromial impingement syndrome including indications

A method of shoulder sonography in which lateral and anterior elevation of the arm is used during scanning was demonstrated to be effective in cases of suspected impingement syndrome. The value of the method lies in its ability to demonstrate fluid collection in the subacromial-subdeltoid bursal system, with gradual distention of the bursa and lateral ...

MRI of impingement syndromes of the shoulder
Clinical Radiology, 2009The diagnosis of shoulder impingement is primarily a clinical one. Imaging has a role in assisting clinicians in developing a treatment strategy by identifying and characterizing the cause of shoulder impingement. In this review, the relevant anatomy, cause/pathomechanics, clinical features, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of the ...
