Abrupt changes in grassland productivity induced by shrub encroachment

open access: yes
Grasslands are important ecosystems that sustain productive pastoral enterprises and support multiple ecosystem functions. Yet grasslands are threatened by shrub encroachment, the transformation of grass‐dominant states to those dominated by woody plants.

Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus) survival in southwestern Oregon

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We captured and monitored radio‐collared ringtails over 2 years to estimate monthly and annual survival rates. We found that annual survival rates were much higher within forested landscapes in Oregon than for populations in the southwestern United States.

Habitat preferences of the encroacher shrub, Seriphium plumosum

open access: yesSouth African Journal of Botany, 2012
AbstractThe ecology of Seriphium plumosum is not yet fully understood and therefore requires in-depth research to assist with the control of this encroacher plant. The habitat preferences of the plant were quantified for terrain morphological units in terms of soil fertility, saline/sodic conditions and soil–water relationships.

Validating antler‐ and movement‐based estimates of caribou reproduction using video camera collars Validation des estimations de la reproduction du caribou basées sur la rétention des bois et  sur le déplacement à l'aide de colliers‐caméras

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
We used GPS video camera collar data from barren‐ground caribou in the Porcupine and Western Arctic herds to validate antler‐ and movement‐based methods for estimating annual reproductive metrics. Antler retention was highly accurate for estimating parturition, but the movement methods we tested performed marginally for estimating parturition and ...

A state-and-transition approach to alpine grasslands under abandonment

open access: yesiForest - Biogeosciences and Forestry, 2010
The abandonment of the traditional pastoral practices is acknowledged as the main causes of the shrub-encroachment in the alpine semi-natural grasslands.

Managing shrub encroachment in cork oak montado

open access: yes, 2017
The impact of the shrub layers that naturally occupy the montado ecosystem can often be positive. Benefits include: natural tree regeneration; protection from excessive light exposure and animal predation; soil protection; increased carbon sequestration; increased fodder diversity; increased biodiversity. However, there can also be negative impacts ...

Bush encroachment control and risk management in semi-arid rangelands [PDF]

open access: yes
We study the role of bush encroachment control for a farmer’s income and income risk in a stochastic ecological-economic model of grazing management in semiarid rangelands.

shrub encroachment, grazing and facilitation

open access: yes, 2013
This dataset aimed to quantify the interrelationships between grazing, the degree of shrub encroachment at the landscape scale and the effect of individual shrubs on the vegetation and soils beneath them regarding open areas.

The Swedish Arctic Fox Project: 40 years of research in ecology and conservation

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
The 4 central research themes in The Swedish Arctic Fox Project and key deliverables for practical conservation achieved over 4 decades. Abstract The scientific community widely recognizes the value of long‐term studies, especially those with individual‐level resolution; however, maintaining a consecutive data series is associated with multiple ...

Seasonal facilitative and competitive trade‐offs between shrub seedlings and coastal grasses

open access: yesEcosphere, 2020
Shrub expansion is occurring in grasslands globally and may be impacted by the balance of competition and facilitation with existing grasses. Along the mid‐Atlantic and Gulf coasts, the native shrub Morella cerifera (wax myrtle) is rapidly expanding and ...
