Competition and soil conditions limit the growth of High Arctic non‐native plants

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Non‐native vascular plant species in the High Arctic are currently restricted mainly to settlements and other anthropogenically disturbed areas. The reasons for this remain unclear, but climate or dispersal do not appear to be the main limiting factors. Instead, biotic interactions combined with soil conditions may play important roles.

Deciduous Shrub Encroachment Effects On Tundra Soil Properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Deciduous shrub abundance is increasing in tundra ecosystems as an effect of rising temperatures which may change tundra physical properties and, in turn, microbial communities and biogeochemical processes. Two mechanisms through which shrub presence may

Does phenology play a role in the feedbacks underlying shrub encroachment?

open access: yes, 2019
Shrub encroachment has emerged as a global phenomenon over the past century. Multiple drivers have been put forward to explain the increased shrub dominance in various ecosystems around the world.

Ecosystem engineers and functional dominance: when species loss matters for ecosystem function

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Understanding when and why species loss affects community function in natural communities remains an open question in ecology. Recent cross‐system analyses have shown that functional dominance is associated with whether species loss matters: in communities dominated by few high‐performing species, lost species contribute little to function.

Regeneration Limitations of Hippophae rhamnoides Population After Successfully Encroached on the Qinghai‐Tibetan Plateau

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
Shrub encroachment can alter the structure and function of grassland ecosystems, leading to their degradation. Therefore, population regeneration dynamics after shrub encroachment on the influence of grassland should not be ignored. H.

Designing for biodiversity data in place: Species, encounters, and interfaces

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Species occurrence data, which records the presence of an organism at a point in space and time, is central to environmental science and its opening up to new forms of participation such as citizen science. Such data are increasingly aggregated and mobilised, reaching diverse audiences.

Cool-Season Floodplain Meadow Responses to Shrub Encroachment in Alberta

open access: yes, 2009
This study evaluated the impact of shrub encroachment within cool-season floodplain meadows in a portion of the Rocky Mountain Forest Reserve in southwestern Alberta, where nearly half of open grasslands have been lost since 1958.

Nature‐based solutions for protected area governance: A systematic review

open access: yesPeople and Nature, EarlyView.
Abstract Nature‐based solutions (NBSs) have been introduced as an effective approach for climate change resilience and a set of actions to conserve, restore and sustainably manage natural or modified ecosystems, while simultaneously providing benefits to human well‐being and biodiversity.

Beyond forests: Harnessing conservation gardening for open biomes in Brazil

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Urban gardening offers an innovative conservation strategy by integrating native ornamental species into urban landscapes. We evaluated the ornamental potential of the Brazilian flora by comparing the representation of species from forests versus open biomes (focusing on campo rupestre grasslands) and introduced and validated the Index of Ornamental ...

Separating Shrub Cover From Green Vegetation in Grasslands Using Hyperspectral Vegetation Indices

open access: yesCanadian Journal of Remote Sensing
Shrub cover is a key parameter for monitoring woody plant encroachment (WPE) in the background of global grassland degradation. At the critical early encroachment stage, many shrub species are small, and it is impossible to be detected through height ...
