Environmental effects of Shuttle launch and landing

Shuttle Environment and Operations Meeting, 1983
The areas of concern were the toxic exhaust cloud produced by Shuttle launch, the effect of launch operations on the total ecology, and the sonic boom produced by Orbiter re-entry. Wet acidic dust fell from the exhaust cloud for about ten minutes after launch.

Effect of lesions in hippocampal subareas on rat shuttle behavior

Physiology & Behavior, 1979
Abstract Rats with lesions in subareas CA3 and CA4/dentate gyrus of the dorsal hippocampus were submitted to four different experimental situations in a shuttlebox. Animals with CA3 lesions made less shuttle responses to a buzzer than sham-operated or intact control animals in two of the tests, in which the buzzer was paired (i.e., given contiguous ...

Reliability of Space-Shuttle Pressure Vessels with Random Batch Effects

Technometrics, 2000
In this article we revisit the problem of estimating the joint reliability against failure by stress rupture of a group of fiber-wrapped pressure vessels used on Space-Shuttle missions. The available test data were obtained from an experiment conducted at the U.S.

Shuttle and MIR Special Environmental Effects and Hardware Cleanliness

High Performance Polymers, 2000
The Evaluation of Space Environment and Effects on Materials (ESEM) experiments were developed, flown in-space on the STS-85 mission (August 1997), returned to Earth and analysed as one element of a collaboration between the National Space Development Agency (NASDA) of Japan and the National Aeronautics and Space Agency (NASA) of the United States ...

Thruster effects on the shuttle potential during TSS 1

Journal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 1996
We have surveyed measurements taken by the Shuttle Potential and Return Electron Experiment (SPREE) in the shuttle payload bay during the satellite deployment phase of the Tethered Satellite System (TSS 1) mission. The shuttle was flying in an inverse airplane mode with its engine bells facing the ram direction to facilitate ion current collection ...

Effects of amphetamine on shuttle-box performance of hamsters

Pharmacological Research Communications, 1970
Summary Golden and albino hamsters showed poor avoidance responding in the shuttle-box. The administration of amphetamine in pretrained animals clearly improved performance. Results are discussed in relation to a possible disinhibitory effect of the drug and to a consequent increase in the vigilance level.

Cost Effectiveness Enhancement Initiative For The Space Shuttle Contract

INCOSE International Symposium, 1993
AbstractThis paper will describe the partnership agreement with our NASA Customer and the process improvement techniques utilized to reduce the cost of performing integration tasks during a downturn of the business environment. It will cover a period of two years (FY91 & FY92).

Effects of low attenuation in a nanomechanical electron shuttle

Journal of Applied Physics, 2004
We have measured the spectral current characteristics of a nanomechanical electron shuttle in a tuning-fork configuration. This particular design enhances the quality factor Q of the nanoelectromechanical system. Comparing the experimental results to a precedingly studied low-Q device, we find a substantially different current behavior, indicating an ...

Effect of speedup delay on shuttle bus schedule

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2016
Abstract We study the bus schedule in the shuttle bus transportation system controlled by speedup. The bus schedule is closely related to the dynamic motion of the bus. The motion of a shuttle bus depends on the inflow rate of passengers and the delayed speedup control.

Phase Noise Effects on Space Shuttle Communications Link Performance

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1978
The purpose of this paper is to present a theory which can be used to determine the effects which phase noise sources produce on the bit error probability performance of phase coherent links. The paper begins by presenting typical math models for phase noise sources known to exist in frequency generators.
