From Iconic Species to Biodiversity: The Role of Zoos in Inspiring Visitors' Affinity for a Broader Range of Wild Animals

open access: yesIntegrative Conservation, Volume 4, Issue 2, Page 205-217, June 2025.
Zoo visits significantly influence wildlife preferences, enhancing fondness for a wider range of species and fostering affinity for less popular taxa. The interplay between enclosure and interpretive characteristics proved crucial in driving these changes, highlighting ways to optimize zoo conservation education. ABSTRACT Preferences for animal species

Assessment of Changes in the Composition and Distribution of Large and Medium‐Sized Mammals in Xishuangbanna, Southwest China

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 11, November 2024.
We employed 785 camera traps to precisely assess large and medium‐sized mammal composition and distribution in tropical Xishuangbanna. Our findings highlight the uneven distribution of large and medium‐sized mammal communities in Xishuangbanna, with rare and large‐sized species being more vulnerable to rapid environmental changes.

Similarity learning networks uniquely identify individuals of four marine and terrestrial species

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 15, Issue 10, October 2024.
Abstract Estimating the size of animal populations plays an important role in evidence‐based conservation and management. Some methods for estimating population size rely on animals being individually identifiable. Traditionally, this has been done by marking physically captured animals, but increasingly, animals with distinctive natural markings are ...

A simple and effective method to enrich endogenous DNA from mammalian faeces

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 24, Issue 4, May 2024.
Abstract Utilization of faeces has long been a popular approach for genetic and ecological studies of wildlife. However, the success of molecular marker genotyping and genome resequencing is often unpredictable due to insufficient enrichment of endogenous DNA in the total faecal DNA that is dominated by bacterial DNA. Here, we report a simple and cheap

Individual genotypes from environmental DNA: Fingerprinting snow tracks of three large carnivore species

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 24, Issue 3, April 2024.
Abstract Continued advancements in environmental DNA (eDNA) research have made it possible to access intraspecific variation from eDNA samples, opening new opportunities to expand non‐invasive genetic studies of wildlife populations. However, the use of eDNA samples for individual genotyping, as typically performed in non‐invasive genetics, still ...
