Journal of Animal Ecology, Volume 95, Issue 2, Page 282-295, February 2026.We reveal that early stages of deadwood decomposition follow ecological rules of ephemeral resource patches. By tracking beetle communities over 12 years, we show how decomposition dynamics shape community assembly patterns, highlighting the importance of continuous deadwood input for sustaining saproxylic beetles in temperate forests.
