In vitro and in sacco determination of neutral detergent fibre digestibility of treated cereal straw

open access: yesJSFA reports, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Cereal straw is hardly digestible due to its complex bonds of lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose. That is why chemical treatments, such as with sodium hydroxide, may help to loosen the bonds and thus increase ruminal digestibility. Neutral detergent fibre (NDF) digestibility is a good predictor of feed intake.

Copaiba oleoresin as a substitute for sodium lasalocid in high‐concentrate diets for lambs: growth performance, ingestive behavior, and metabolic and ruminal parameters

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND The indiscriminate and excessive use of ionophore additives has been associated with the emergence of multi‐resistant pathogenic strains and the global spread of antibiotic resistance, raising serious public health concerns. Thus, plant biocompounds have been the focus of several studies aiming to replace ionophore additives in ...

Health risk assessment of heavy metal accumulation in fruits exposed to geothermal waters: a case study and global implications

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND The present study investigated the potential health risks of heavy metals (HMs) in the fruits and leaves of mulberry and sour cherry trees exposed to water from Sivas geothermal basin (Turkey). RESULTS The target HMs were ranked according to their hazard index as: Cd < Pb < Zn < Cu < Ni < Mn < Cr. The total hazard index for mulberry
