Quantification by SIFT-MS of acetaldehyde released by lung cells in a 3D model

The Analyst, 2013
Our previous studies have shown that both lung cancer cells and non-malignant lung cells release acetaldehyde in vitro. However, data from other laboratories have produced conflicting results. Furthermore, all these studies have been carried out in 2D models which are less physiological cell growth systems when compared to 3D models. Therefore, we have

SIFT-MS a novel tool for monitoring and evaluating a biofilter performance

Chemical Engineering Journal, 2016
Abstract Biofilters are suitable to treat industrial emissions polluted with volatile organic compounds. This study investigates the selected ion flow tube mass spectrometer (SIFT-MS) as a new and fast analysis apparatus to determine the performance, the biokinetic parameters and the external porosity of a biofilter.

SIFT-MS: development of instrumentation and applications.

2007
Data is presented for a range of experiments that have been performed using a selected ion flow tube (SIFT) instrument operated at room temperature (~ 298K) with carrier gas pressures typically in the range of 0.3 – 0.6 Torr. The majority of the experiments discussed are performed on a Voice100 instrument that has not been described in detail ...

SIFT-MS

Selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) is a chromatography-free, direct-analysis technique that is ideally suited to real-time, quantitative analysis of volatile compounds in air at trace concentrations. SIFT-MS utilises highly controlled, soft chemical ionisation – in the form of gas-phase ion–molecule reactions – coupled with mass ...

Time-integrated thermal desorption for quantitative SIFT-MS analyses of atmospheric monoterpenes

Analytical and Bioanalytical Chemistry, 2019
A new time-integrated thermal desorption technique has been developed that can be used with selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry, TI-TD/SIFT-MS, for off-line quantitative analyses of VOCs accumulated onto sorbents. Using a slow desorption temperature ramp, the absolute amounts of desorbed compounds can be quantified in real time by SIFT-MS and ...

Increased concentrations of breath haloamines are not detectable in airways inflammation using SIFT-MS

Journal of Breath Research, 2011
The haloamines, including the chloramines (H(2)NCl, HNCl(2)) and bromamine (H(2)NBr), are diffusible gases that are likely to be produced during inflammation and so may be present as markers of lung inflammation on breath. Although haloamines are quite reactive, it is possible to measure these compounds in humid samples using SIFT-MS.

SIFT-MS Measurement of VOC Distribution Coefficients in Human Blood Constituents and Urine

Applied Occupational and Environmental Hygiene, 2003
The new technique of selected ion flow tube-mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) has been applied to the measurement of Henry's Law constants for the volatile organic chemicals o-xylene and trichloroethylene that both have low solubility in aqueous solvents. The method is validated by measurements in water at 298 K using the equilibrium partitioning in closed ...

Design and Implementation of Analytical Mathematics for SIFT-MS Medical Applications

2009
Selected Ion Flow Tube-Mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) is an analytical measurement technology for the real-time quantification of volatile organic compounds in gaseous samples. This technology has current and potential applications in a wide variety of industries, although the focus of this research is in medical science.

SIFT-MS Data Analysis

SIFT-MS utilises direct, soft chemical ionisation coupled with mass spectrometric detection, rather than chromatographic separation, to analyse samples with high specificity. This means that SIFT-MS data differ significantly from GC and LC data in that they are a superposition of mass spectra of the different reactive compounds (analytes and matrix ...

The Principles of the SIFT-MS Technique

The selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) technique operates on very different principles to the more established chromatographic methods. This chapter provides a comprehensive introduction to how SIFT-MS instruments work, the ion–molecule reaction (IMR) chemistry that provides both comprehensive and specific analysis, and the utilisation ...
