Optimization for sigma-delta modulators

Proceedings of 13th International Conference on Digital Signal Processing, 2002
The performance of a higher-order single-stage sigma-delta modulator (/spl Sigma//spl Delta/M) is determined by the loop filter in which the quantizer is embedded. Not the coefficients in the loop filter themselves, but ratios of them determine the input-output relationship in the modulator and thus its performance.

Hexagonal Sigma-Delta modulation

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I: Fundamental Theory and Applications, 2003
A novel application and generalization of sigma-delta (/spl Sigma//spl Delta/) modulation has emerged in three-phase power-electronic converters. A conventional /spl Sigma//spl Delta/ modulator with scalar signals and binary quantizer is generalized to a /spl Sigma//spl Delta/ modulator with vector signals and a hexagonal quantizer.

Choice of Sigma-Delta Modulation

2012
This chapter presents a comparative study of all-digital ΣΔM structures as part of the multi-standard frequency synthesizer [1]. As discussed previously, ΣΔ modulation is used to enable fractional frequency synthesis by modulating a sequence of division values with a desired fractional mean and providing the added advantage of noise shaping. It is also

Basics of Sigma-Delta Modulation

2011
This chapter provides a basic introduction to sigma-delta modulation in general. It first discusses the use of sigma-delta modulation for analog-to-digital, digital-to-digital, and digital-to-analog conversion, after which the most popular sigma-delta structures are presented. A procedure for basic linear modeling of sigma-delta modulators is presented

Sigma-delta modulators operated in optimization mode

2004 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (IEEE Cat. No.04CH37512), 2004
The conditions for a lowpass sigma-delta modulator stably operated in optimization mode are derived. In this mode of operation, the stability and performance of the modulator can be rigorously analyzed. Based on the analysis, an effective design method is presented for designing a lowpass modulator of arbitrary order.

Sigma delta and multi-stage sigma delta modulation with inside loop dithering

[Proceedings] ICASSP 91: 1991 International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 1991
Dithering inside the loop of sigma-delta and multistage sigma-delta modulators is studied. It is shown under certain conditions that dithering inside the loop of the sigma-delta modulator has the effect of attenuating the discrete quantization error spikes. It does not make the quantization error white.

MASH Sigma-Delta Modulators

2018
So far only the possibility of creating stable, high-order Sigma-Delta modulators through a careful loop architecture choice and/or using multi-bit quantization has been considered. As demonstrated in previous chapters, although this approach can yield effective high-order loop designs, it also results in mathematically intensive (the Schreier’s ...
