RAPD analysis of Nectomys squamipes (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) populations [PDF]

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 2000
Random amplified of polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis was used to assess genetic distance and the genetic structure of populations of Nectomys squamipes, a semiaquatic rodent species distributed along watercourses. DNA samples of five populations were analyzed using three primers, producing 45 scorable bands, 31 of which were polymorphic.

A new species of Hypocristata (Nematoda, Trichostrongylina, Heligmosomoidea) a parasite of Sigmodon hispidus (Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae) from Venezuela

open access: yesParasite, 2006
Description of Hypocristata tercera n. sp. (Heligmonellidae, Nippostrongylinae) a parasite of the small intestine of Sigmodon hispidus (Rodent, Sigmodontinae) from Venezuela. Two other species were described in the genus, both from Colombia and parasitic

Rapid mitochondrial genome sequencing based on Oxford Nanopore Sequencing and a proxy for vertebrate species identification

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 10, Issue 7, Page 3544-3560, April 2020., 2020
The findings of this study suggest ONT sequencing as a suitable candidate to solve species identification problems in metazoan nonmodel organisms and generate complete mtDNA datasets. Abstract Molecular information is crucial for species identification when facing challenging morphology‐based specimen identifications.

Sigmodontinae rodents as hosts for larvae and nymphs of Ixodes loricatus Neumann, 1899 (Acari: Ixodidae)

open access: yesParasite, 2004
Larvae and nymphs of Ixodes loricatus Neumann, 1899 ticks (confirmed by morphological characters and by comparison of 16S mitochondrial rDNA sequences) were collected from Sigmodontinae Wagner, rodents in central and northern Argentina and Uruguay.

Characterisation of the vascular pathology in Sigmodon hispidus (Rodentia: Cricetidae) following experimental infection with Angiostrongylus costaricensis (Nematoda: Metastrongylidae)

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz
BACKGROUND Angiostrongylus costaricensis is a nematode that causes human abdominal angiostrongyliasis, a disease found mainly in Latin American countries and particularly in Brazil and Costa Rica. Its life cycle involves exploitation of both invertebrate
