In der Chirurgischen Klinik der Medizinischen Akademie Dusseldorf wurden von 1946 bis 1964 insgesamt 268 entzundliche Sigmaerkrankungen beobachtet. Seit 1950 last sich eine erhebliche Zunahme dieser Sigmoiditiden nachweisen. Bemerkenswert ist die grose Zahl von regionalen Colitiden ohne Divertikelnachweis.

GIANT SIGMOID DIVERTICULUM

Giant sigmoid diverticulum is a large air-containing cyst which represents a rare complication of diverticulosis. All such cysts that have been reported were found in the sigmoid colon and were associated with diverticular disease. The roentgenographic findings are unique and sufficiently characteristic to permit preoperative diagnosis.

Giant sigmoid diverticulum

Summary A case of giant diverticulum of the sigmoid colon in a seventy-two year old man has been reported. Such large diverticula are rare. Because of the rather broad diameter of the neck of the diverticulum, it was completely delineated on barium enema examination.

Neonatal sigmoid volvulus

Neonatal sigmoid volvulus is a rare entity. It is associated with Hirschsprung's disease. Presentation is acute abdominal distention, vomiting and obstipation. Abdominal radiograph will show the "coffee bean" sign, but this is frequently missed and the diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion.

Giant colonic diverticulum is an uncommon presentation of colonic diverticular disease. It is characterised by the presence of a diverticulum exceeding 4 cm in size, with approximately 90% of the cases involving the sigmoid colon. Typically, diagnosis relies on CT of the abdomen and pelvis (CTAP).
