Bladder symptoms due to silent sigmoid disease

The American Journal of Surgery, 1969
Abstract Emphasis is placed on the occurrence of sigmoidovesical fistula as one of the obscure causes of bladder symptoms (frequency, dysuria, and nocturia with or without pyuria) likely to elude clinical detection. Two cases are presented which illustrate this point.

Influence of sigmoid resection on progression of diverticular disease of the colon

Diseases of the Colon & Rectum, 1984
The surgeon is frequently confronted with the problem of how much colon to resect when operating on patients with colonic diverticulosis or diverticulitis. Two questions arise: will diverticulosis progress in the proximal colon if only the sigmoid is removed, and will diverticulitis recur in the more proximal diverticula?

Use of the Recto-Sigmoid Index to Diagnose Hirschsprung’s Disease

Clinical Pediatrics, 2007
The recto-sigmoid index on barium enema may aid in the diagnosis of Hirschsprung’s disease. However, data on its reliability in different age groups are sparse. The recto-sigmoid index and transitional zone were evaluated blindly in 107 patients with diagnostic rectal suction biopsies.

The Muscle Abnormality in Diverticular Disease of the Sigmoid Colon

The British Journal of Radiology, 1963
It is not uncommon for pathologists to report that they can find no evidence of inflammation in surgical specimens of “diverticulitis”. In a consecutive series of 155 specimens inflammation was present in 103 (66 per cent). Abscess formation, even of a very slight or focal character, was thus absent from about one third of the specimens.
