Noise Smoothing for Structural Vibration Test Signals Using an Improved Wavelet Thresholding Technique

open access: yesSensors, 2012
In structural vibration tests, one of the main factors which disturb the reliability and accuracy of the results are the noise signals encountered. To overcome this deficiency, this paper presents a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) approach to denoise ...

Machine Learning‐Based Optimization of Pixel Light Intensities for Improving Polymerization Accuracy in Digital Light Processing 3D Printing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A machine learning platform is developed to optimize sliced images for digital light processing 3D printing by locally tuning light intensity for higher precision printing. A reduced‐order model accurately predicts the degree of conversion in 3D space to calculate resulting shapes.

A Chattering Suppression of Proportional Sliding Mode Control with Composite Nonlinear Feedback Technique using Sigmoid Function for MacPherson Active Suspension System

open access: yesApplications of Modelling and Simulation, 2018
The chattering problem phenomenon occurred due to the high-frequency switching of a sliding mode controller exciting unmodelled dynamics in the closed loop.

Characterization of a Class of Sigmoid Functions with Applications to Neural Networks

open access: yesNeural Networks, 1996
We study two classes of sigmoids: the simple sigmoids, defined to be odd, asymptotically bounded, completely monotone functions in one variable, and the hyperbolic sigmoids, a proper subset of simple sigmoids and a natural generalization of the hyperbolic tangent. We obtain a complete characterization for the inverses of hyperbolic sigmoids using Euler'

High Contrast and High Efficiency Optical Weighting for Integrated Photonic Computing

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Herein, a combined pulse optical weighting scheme is proposed for photonic synapses. Employing a 4 μm$\umu{\rm m}$ long non‐volatile phase‐change material covered on a straight waveguide, a transmission contrast of 31.2 dB is achieved. By exploiting the non‐Arrhenius behavior of the material, the crystallization energy is reduced to 107 pJ, with ...

C2LI: Enhancing Structural Color Sensing and Imaging via Complementary Color Laser Illumination

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
This article introduces complementary color laser illumination (C2LI) and demonstrates it to be an effective approach for engaging the visual system to enhance perceptual sensitivity and chromatic contrast. This enhances a human user's ability to detect subtle differences in sample or medium characteristics, enabling novel applications in colorimetric ...

Submicrosecond Electric Switching of Large Birefringence in the Isotropic Phase of Ferroelectric Nematics

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
We demonstrate ultra‐fast and efficient electro‐optical switching using the isotropic phase of ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals. A moderate electric field induces a transition to polar ferroelectric nematic order, producing large field‐induced birefringence with sub‐microsecond switch‐on and switch‐off times. This advance enables new opportunities
