Direct thrust force and flux control of a PM-linear synchronous motor using fuzzy sliding-mode observer [PDF]
In this paper, a fuzzy sliding-mode observer, which uses sigmoid function for speed sensorless control of permanent-magnet linear synchronous motor (PMLSM) is proposed.

Turning on the alarm: the neural mechanisms of the transition from innocuous to painful sensation [PDF]
The experience of pain occurs when the level of a stimulus is sufficient to elicit a marked affective response, putatively to warn the organism of potential danger and motivate appropriate behavioral responses.

A Novel Sigmoid-Function-Based Adaptive Weighted Particle Swarm Optimizer
In this paper, a novel particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is put forward where a sigmoid-function-based weighting strategy is developed to adaptively adjust the acceleration coefficients. The newly proposed adaptive weighting strategy takes into

An all-optical neuron with sigmoid activation function
We present an all-optical neuron that utilizes a logistic sigmoid activation function, using a Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) input & weighting scheme. The activation function is realized by means of a deeply-saturated differentially-biased Semiconductor Optical Amplifier-Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (SOA-MZI) followed by a SOA-Cross-Gain ...

Sigmoid functions and multiscale resolution of singularities
In this short, conceptual paper we observe that essentially the same mathematics applies in three contexts with disparate literatures: (1) sigmoidal and RBF approximation of smooth functions, (2) rational approximation of analytic functions near singularities, and (3) $hp$ mesh refinement for solution of PDEs.

Some properties of the Blumberg's hyper-log-logistic curve
The paper considers the sigmoid function definedthrough the hyper-log-logistic model introduced by Blumberg. We study the Hausdorff distance of this sigmoid to the Heaviside function, which characterises the shape of switching from 0 to 1.

SAI, a Sensible Artificial Intelligence that plays Go
We propose a multiple-komi modification of the AlphaGo Zero/Leela Zero paradigm. The winrate as a function of the komi is modeled with a two-parameters sigmoid function, so that the neural network must predict just one more variable to assess the winrate
