A study of 37 patients with sigmoid volvulus is presented. Subsequent bouts of recurrent volvulus are very common after sigmoidoscopic intubation, and overall mortality rates are high. Surgical resection is the preferred method of treatment.

Neonatal sigmoid volvulus is a rare entity. It is associated with Hirschsprung's disease. Presentation is acute abdominal distention, vomiting and obstipation. Abdominal radiograph will show the "coffee bean" sign, but this is frequently missed and the diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion.

Sigmoid Volvulus in Adolescence

The diagnosis is usually delayed because of a low level of suspicion. We present the case of a 17-year-old girl with recurrent episodes of sigmoid volvulus, to illustrate the problem.

Although it is common in the adult population, sigmoid volvulus is unusual in childhood. We report the cases of four children treated for sigmoid volvulus, and we review an additional 44 cases. The mean age of occurrence was 8 years. Predisposing factors were present in 33%.

Sigmoid volvulus is often a surgical emergency. The diagnosis is usually reached on the basis of both clinical and radiologic assessment. A review of the radiologic findings in 20 patients diagnosed as having sigmoid volvulus is presented. Typical radiographic features are illustrated. Reasons for their absence in certain cases are discussed.
