Optimising signal-to-noise ratio
1990Electrical noise and interfering signals contain a random mixture of all frequencies, whereas the evoked potential only contains selected frequencies. The objective in filtering is to remove noise which does not overlap the signal by blocking it from entering the computer system (Fig. 73).

Signal-to-noise ratio in Fourier spectroscopy
Applied Optics, 1977Calculations of the SNR obtainable with a Fourier transform spectrometer as well as that obtainable with a photometer or scanning device are presented. It is shown that the SNR obtained with a Fourier spectrometer is (N/8)(1/2) greater than that obtained with a scanning device (where N is the desired number of spectral elements scanned).
