It is very important that methods be developed to extract signals from the noisy backgrounds that usually accompany them. Signal processing has, therefore, become an important field in communications and in acoustics. The human ear processes the information it receives and does a reasonably good job of filtering.

This chapter covers signals and signal processing. It presents a unified treatment of signals and interrupts, which helps put signals into a proper perspective. It treats signals as interrupts to processes, which diverts a process from its normal executions to do signal processing.

This paper explores issues arising from designing digital signal processing algorithms for dynamically-varying computing environments such as an unreliable network of processors. We present a language for specifying signal processing algorithms which permits the execution path of the algorithm to be dynamically chosen. The language leads naturally to a

The baseband signal processing of the ALTAIR wireless in-building network (WIN) is described. The discussion covers the 19-GHz oscillator, burst processing, packet detection, symbol clock synchronization and gain and offset correction. The algorithms described are carried out in a single ASIC composed of 60000 active gates.

The first version of G.fast occupies frequencies up to 106 MHz and uses relatively simple linear channel-inverting matrix precoders to cancel the crosstalk in a multi-pair telephone cable. However, to truly deliver Gbps+ data rates to most customers, even higher frequencies should be used; where the crosstalk can be stronger than the signal, and so ...

2002 14th International Conference on Digital Signal Processing Proceedings. DSP 2002 (Cat. No.02TH8628), 2003The ongoing reunification of the several biological areas - especially genetics, evolution, development and ecology - into a coherent whole is expected to rely increasingly on the application of mathematic-computational concepts and techniques, which characterizes the new area of bioinformatics.

Asymptotic analyses are abundant in the literature. However, some people (practitioners or not) question their usefulness. Others argue that they are useful. We do the same here. More exactly, we try to explain briefly why "asymptomania" is not a "dangerous disorder", but rather an addiction to a useful tool.

The human binaural system has a number of astonishing capabilities that are essential for the formation of our aural worlds. To mimic these, signal-processing models of the binaural system have been built and are constantly improved. In the following, the current state of the art of these models will be reviewed and their potential with respect to ...

This paper describes the major trends in sonar signal processing and gives some example of advanced algorithms to illustrate the need in computation power: adaptive beamforming for passive sonars, wideband Doppler code for active sonar in coastal/shallow water environment (reverberation limiting conditions) and synthetic aperture processing for ...
