Abstract Silcretes and associated deep weathering-profiles have been reported in the Cobar area of New South Wales. Re-examination of the relevant field sites and a detailed laboratory study of rock samples showed that siliceous materials outcropping at these locations are bedrock essentially unaltered since Palaeozoic burial and deformation.
