Silent Interval Duration as a Perceptual Cue of Speech Pauses

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1970
The effect of silent-interval duration on the perception of pauses in speech was investigated. The stimuli consisted of five recorded sentences within which the words “lost” and “contact” were manipulated so that their syntactic relation to one another varied in complexity from sentence to sentence.

Perception of prosodic boundaries in spontaneous speech with and without silent pauses.

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2010
In speech comprehension, listeners attend to variation in multiple acoustic parameters encoding prosodic structure. Given the multiplicity of acoustic cues, we ask whether prosody perception is dependent on any individual cue or whether acoustic redundancy encoding prosody supports robust prosody perception in the absence of an individual cue.

Although the effect of gesture inhibition on speech disfluencies is well studied in scripted or non-emotional context, its effect on silent pause behaviour, particularly in spontaneous, emotionally charged narratives remains unexplored.
