Auto-Continuous Synthesis of Robust and Hydrophobic Silica Aerogel Microspheres from Low-Cost Aqueous Sodium Silicate for Fast Dynamic Organics Removal

open access: yesGels, 2022
An efficient auto-continuous globing process was developed with a self-built apparatus to synthesize pure silica aerogel microspheres (PSAMs) using sodium silicate as a precursor and water as a solvent. A hydrophobic silica aerogel microsphere (HSAM) was

Effect of Drying Control Agent on Physicochemical and Thermal Properties of Silica Aerogel Derived via Ambient Pressure Drying Process

open access: yesEnergies, 2023
This paper presents the effect of drying control agents on the physicochemical and thermal properties of hydrophobic silica aerogels derived via the ambient pressure drying (APD) method by a surface silylation using a TMCS/n-hexane mixture.

Nanopores in Silica Aerogels

open access: yesActa Physica Polonica A, 2008
The size of nanopores in thermally treated samples of silica aerogels was determined by ortho-positronium lifetime measurements at room temperature. The annealing of samples in the temperature region of 300−800◦C does not make substantial changes in pore size felt by positronium.

Globally anisotropic high porosity silica aerogels [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 2008
We discuss two methods by which high porosity silica aerogels can be engineered to exhibit global anisotropy. First, anisotropy can be introduced with axial strain. In addition, intrinsic anisotropy can result during growth and drying stages and, suitably controlled, it can be correlated with preferential radial shrinkage in cylindrical samples.
