Smectic ordering in liquid crystal - aerosil dispersions II. Scaling analysis

open access: yes, 2002
Liquid crystals offer many unique opportunities to study various phase transitions with continuous symmetry in the presence of quenched random disorder (QRD).

Design of a silica-aerogel-based cosmic dust collector for the Tanpopo mission aboard the International Space Station

open access: yes, 2014
We are developing a silica-aerogel-based cosmic dust collector for use in the Tanpopo experiment to be conducted on the International Space Station. The mass production of simple two-layer hydrophobic aerogels was undertaken in a contamination-controlled

Multi‐Scale Interface Engineering of MXenes for Multifunctional Sensory Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
MXenes, as two‐dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides, demonstrate remarkable capabilities for multifunctional sensing applications. This review systematically examines multi‐scale interface engineering approaches that enhance sensing performance, enable diverse detection functionalities, and improve system‐level compatibility in MXene ...

Thermochemical Properties of Glass Wool/Maerogel Composites

open access: yesAdvances in Materials Science and Engineering, 2016
Aerogel blankets are composites of silica aerogel particles dispersed in a reinforcing fiber matrix that turns the brittle aerogel into durable and flexible insulating materials.

Study of a Threshold Cherenkov Counter Based on Silica Aerogels with Low Refractive Indices

open access: yes, 1994
To identify $\pi^{\pm}$ and $K^{\pm}$ in the region of $1.0\sim 2.5$ GeV/c, a threshold Cherenkov counter equipped with silica aerogels has been investigated.

Silicified Wood‐Inspired, High‐Strength Fire‐Resistant Chitin‐Based Aerogels for Sustainable High‐Temperature Thermal Insulation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by natural silicified wood, a biomimetic mineralized chitin‐derived aerogel is constructed. It can withstand 81 000 times its own weight, and its backside temperature is 130.4°C after exposure to ∼1300°C butane flame for 600 s, exhibiting high‐strength, fire‐resistance, and super thermal‐insulation properties.

Condensation of helium in aerogels and athermal dynamics of the Random Field Ising Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
High resolution measurements reveal that condensation isotherms of $^4$He in a silica aerogel become discontinuous below a critical temperature. We show that this behaviour does not correspond to an equilibrium phase transition modified by the disorder ...

3D Anodic Alumina Nanoarchitectures: A Decade of Progress from Foundational Science to Functional Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Ordered three‐dimensional anodic aluminum oxide (3D‐AAO) nanoarchitectures with longitudinal and transverse pores enable architecture‐driven metamaterials. The review maps fabrication advances, including hybrid pulse anodization, and shows how 3D‐AAO templates tailor properties across magnetism, energy, catalysis, and sensing.

One-Pot Sol–Gel Synthesis of Highly Insulative Hybrid P(AAm-CO-AAc)-Silica Aerogels with Improved Mechanical and Thermal Properties

open access: yesGels, 2023
Silica aerogels and their derivatives have outstanding thermal properties with exceptional values in the thermal insulation industry. However, their brittle nature restricts their large-scale commercialization.

Performance of the Two Aerogel Cherenkov Detectors of the JLab Hall A Hadron Spectrometer

open access: yes, 2008
We report on the design and commissioning of two silica aerogel Cherenkov detectors with different refractive indices. In particular, extraordinary performance in terms of the number of detected photoelectrons was achieved through an appropriate choice ...
