Silicon Photomultipliers - End of the Photomultiplier Tubes Era

LEOS 2007 - IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society Annual Meeting Conference Proceedings, 2007
The principle of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) is discussed. The SiPM structure is based on the array of submicron semiconductor micro-cells, working in breakdown mode with integrated quenching elements and common electrode. The characteristics and the operational conditions of the SiPM is presented.

Silicon photomultiplier light response properties

2007 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record, 2007
The presented results are obtained during the first steps taken in order to develop a setup and measurement procedures which allow to compare properties of diverse kinds of silicon photomultiplier. The response to low-intensity light was studied for silicon photomultipliers produced by MEPhI/PULSAR (Russia), CPTA (Russia), Hamamatsu (Japan), ITC-irst ...

CMOS Silicon Photomultiplier Development

2018
CMOS—complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor technology at present time is the most advanced semiconductor technology for the development and production of microelectronic elements. Many signs have long pointed toward CMOS as the preferable sensor technology of the future.

Brachytherapy dosimeter with silicon photomultipliers

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2015
Abstract In-vivo and in-situ measurement of the radiation dose administered during brachytherapy faces several technical challenges, requiring a very compact, tissue-equivalent, linear and highly sensitive dosimeter, particularly in low-dose rate brachytherapy procedures, which use radioactive seeds with low energy and low dose deposition rate.

Silicon Photomultiplier Technology at STMicroelectronics

IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science, 2009
In this paper we present the results of the first electrical and optical characterization performed on 1 mm2 total area Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM) fabricated in standard silicon planar technology at the STMicroelectronics Catania R&D clean room facility. The device consists of 289 microcells and has a geometrical fill factor of 48%.

Silicon photomultipliers for scintillating trackers

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2012
Abstract In recent years, silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) have been proposed as a new kind of readout device for scintillating detectors in many experiments. A SiPM consists of a matrix of parallel-connected pixels, which are independent photon counters working in Geiger mode with very high gain ( ∼ 10 6 ). This contribution presents the

Silicon photomultipliers development at STMicroelectronics

SPIE Proceedings, 2013
Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) are fabricated in two different configurations: p-on-n and n-on-p junctions. More particularly p-on-n SiPMs turn out to be more suitable in nuclear medical imaging applications like Positron Emission Tomography (PET), due to their higher sensitivity in blue wavelength range where common PET scintillators have their ...

Recent developments in silicon photomultipliers

Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment, 2007
Abstract A novel type of avalanche photodetector with Geiger mode operation, known as a Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SiPM) provides an interesting advance in photodetection and is already an alternative to traditional PMTs in many applications. The state of the art of the SiPMs—their main properties and problems—are discussed.
