Autocompaction of shallow silty salt marsh clay

Sedimentary Geology, 2010
Abstract Empirically derived algorithms are suggested by means of which it is possible to evaluate relations between physical properties in silty salt marsh clay. A relation between loss on ignition, sand content and bulk dry density in the topmost 5 cm was found to explain 84% of the variation of the latter. The bulk dry density in the topmost ≈ 0.5

Stability Evaluation Model of a Tunnel Face Excavated by the Benching Method in a Soft Silty Clay Layer

, 2021
With the increasing construction demand for tunnels in soft silty clay layers, it is important to effectively control the face stability of a tunnel.

Ohmic Conductivity of a Compacted Silty Clay

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2002
In its natural state, loess can be considered as an unstable soil, which develops large deformations when moistened. In Argentina, loess is used in most Geotechnical constructions, including embankments and liners. The interest of this work to evaluate the potential application of electrical conductivity measurements for monitoring the effects ...

Metastable states of silty clays during drying

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 2002
An experimental research program has been carried out on the drying behaviour of normally consolidated silty clays with the aim of observing and interpreting state paths followed by soil samples under suction increase at zero external total stress. The behaviour of overconsolidated clays during drying is also discussed for comparison and shows the ...

Lateral stress measurements in a glaciomarine silty clay

Geological Society, London, Engineering Geology Special Publications, 1991
Abstract The paper presents the procedure used for installation of spade-like total stress cells (TSC) in an overconsolidated silty clay and subsequent interpretation of the data obtained. Prior to installation, all the spade cells were calibrated in the laboratory for both pressure and temperature effects.

Trafficability Factor in a Silty Clay Loam Soil

Transactions of the ASAE, 1982
ABSTRACT SUBSURFACE drainage systems affect spring and fall trafficability, the timeliness of planting and subse-quent crop harvest and yield on a silty clay loam marine soil. Drainage effectiveness and trafficability response were evaluated by mercury tensiometers for soil moisture, a cone penetrometer for soil strength and by a subjective walk-on ...

Effect of nano-MgO on mechanical performance of cement stabilized silty clay

Marine georesources & geotechnology, 2020
A series of direct shear tests were performed on cement-admixed silty clay to investigate the effect of cement content and nano-magnesia (MgO) on its shear strength properties. For each normal stress, shear strength increased with cement content. However,

Long-term performance of metro tunnels induced by adjacent large deep excavation and protective measures in Nanjing silty clay

, 2020
This paper presents the construction of a large-scale basement excavation adjacent to the two running metro tunnels in Nanjing silty clay. To investigate the influences of excavation on existing tunnels, a numerical modelling was carried out to predict ...

Undrained Shear Strength Characteristics of Natural Silty Clay

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
Triaxial consolidation undrained shear tests were carried out on both undisturbed and reconstituted samples of natural silty clay to investigate their undrained shear strength characteristics. Test results suggest that the strength envelope of the undisturbed sample is composed by two straight lines, which is different from that of the strength ...

Cyclic Loading of Silty Clay with Drainage Periods

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1991
Undrained repeated load triaxial tests are carried out on anisotropically (Ko) normally consolidated specimens of a silty clay. Each specimen is subjected to five periods of loading at 0.1 Hz. The loading periods have a maximum duration of approximately 2,000 cycles, and are separated by drainage periods.
