Liquefaction Potential of Silty Sand in Simple Shear

open access: yes, 2013
In this paper, the liquefaction potential of medium dense and dense sand layers was studied by performing constant volume (undrained) cyclic simple shear tests using cyclic simple shear apparatus. Strain-controlled approach was adopted.

Simulated elephant foraging alters tree root exudation rates: Species‐specific responses and implications for belowground carbon dynamics in tropical forests

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Asian elephants play crucial roles in ecosystem functioning, and their interactions with plants influence above‐ and belowground carbon cycling. We tested whether their mechanically destructive foraging triggers short‐term, stress‐induced shifts in tree root exudation, an underappreciated pathway linking herbivory to belowground carbon processes.

Dynamic Compaction Test on an Hydraulic Silty Sand Fill

open access: yes, 1993
Dynamic compaction resulted to be the most effective method to compact a very loose hydraulic silty sand fill, with a fine content from 25 to 90 per cent. Two levels of compaction energy were tested.

Using dendroclimatic analysis of exotic deciduous conifers in an arboretum to document tree growth in response to climate change, Northeast Ohio, USA

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Rising temperatures and wetter conditions in the Midcontinent of North America are influencing climate responses in trees. Dendroclimatological analyses of four exotic deciduous conifer species from Secrest Arboretum, Northeast Ohio help identify past, present and future climate‐tree interactions.

Diverse Prairie Mixtures Stabilize Biomass Yields for Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Meeting global demand for sustainable aviation fuel will require the additional production of vast quantities of plant biomass, which does not compete with food production or degrade sensitive ecosystems. Our multisite experiment shows that sowing diverse native prairie seed mixes—and managing them without intensive inputs—yields a more reliable ...

Cyclic Triaxial Loading of Cohesionless Silty Sand

open access: yes, 2015
To engineer efficient structures offshore, we need to extend our knowledge of soil response. Cyclic loading and high water pressure encountered offshore greatly influence cohesionless soil performance.

Suitability of slightly saline irrigation for alleviating drought stress in taro and yam in Tonga: Implications for climate‐resilient Pacific cropping systems

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
There is an increasing risk of drought and salinisation of soil and groundwater globally, including in Pacific Island countries such as Tonga. Irrigating crops with slightly saline water, such as that produced by emerging desalination technologies, could help to alleviate droughts.
