Abstract Most Ordovician and Silurian rocks in western and northwestern Canada were deposited on the North American craton and its western continental margin. Strata of these ages have also been recognized in three allochthonous terranes in the Cordillera, described in the companion volume on the Cordilleran Orogen (Gabrielse and Yorath,

In the history of Silurian biota and ecosystem as a whole no “big” catastrophes occurred like the one at the Ordovician-Silurian boundary. Yet it was not a quiet period either. There were established 15 more or less remarkable bio-events, among others the most severe extinction of conodonts and acritarchs in the very beginning of the Wenlock (Ireviken ...

‘The first true Silurian’ : an evaluation of the site of Murchison's discovery of the Silurian
Proceedings of the Geologists' Association, 1997In 1831 Sir Roderick Impey Murchison undertook an extensive geological fieldwork tour of England and Wales. He recounted retrospectively that one of the most momentous aspects of that tour was his encounter with greywacke rocks at a place called Cavansham Ferry in the valley of the River Wye in Wales. It was here that Murchison first decided that there

Abstract During the Silurian Period, tectonism was fairly marked in the Chinese region, and extensive shallow‐water marine transgressions occurred, with the accompanying development of eugeosynclinal and miogeosynclinal regimes. In the Late Silurian, a Caledonian (Kwangsian) orogenic movement affected several regions of China and regression was marked.

The occurrences of Silurian scorpions, eurypterids, and xiphosurans in Scotland are summarised. Slimonia acuminata var. nov. hendersoni and Stylonurus knoxae sp. nov. are described. New morphological information is given concerning Hughmilleria conica

Introduction The writer agrees with Schuchert in referring to the Silurian system only the strata that occur between the top of the Richmond group of the Ordovician and the base of the Manlius formation of the Devonian. A marked sedimentary break is present at the top of the Richmond everywhere in Illinois, and with the exception of the long-lived ...
