Fumigant and Toxic Activities of Three Essential Oils Against Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (Coleoptera: Silvanidae) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Plant Protection and Pathology, 2023
Control ways in stored-product soils mainly rely on alternative pesticides. The modification of new environmentally friendly alternatives, such as essential oils (EOs), is a key issue.

Quick knockdown results in high mortality: is this theory correct? A case study with phosphine and the red flour beetle

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 79, Issue 10, Page 3740-3748, October 2023., 2023
Twenty‐three different populations of Tribolium castaneum were evaluated for phosphine resistance using a modification of Detia Degesch Phosphine Tolerance Test Kit (DDPTTK). Abstract BACKGROUND The fumigant phosphine is used all over the world for disinfestation of stored grains and commodities.

Artificial fruits and nuts for studying predation of cryptic prey: a case of 3D‐printed coffee berries for studying predation of coffee berry borer by flat bark beetles

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 171, Issue 9, Page 716-720, September 2023., 2023
Studying the effects of predation in cryptic herbivorous insects is difficult because many spend all or most of their life cycle inside their host plant. Here, we designed and 3D‐printed artificial coffee berries to study predation of coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) by flat bark beetles, Cathartus ...

Fine‐scale temporal dynamics of flower visitors sheds light on insect‐assemblage overlap between sexes in a dioecious Ecuadorian palm

open access: yesBiotropica, Volume 55, Issue 1, Page 256-267, January 2023., 2023
We characterized the composition and the temporal variations of the arthropods community visiting female and male inflorescences of the palm Phytelephas aequatorialis. We report 59 morphospecies dominated by three beetle families: Staphylinidae, Nitidulidae, and Curculionidae and 16 pollinator candidates among which nine visited both inflorescence ...

Wolbachia causes cytoplasmic incompatibility but not male‐killing in a grain pest beetle

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 31, Issue 24, Page 6570-6587, December 2022., 2022
Abstract The endosymbiotic Wolbachia is one of the most common intracellular bacteria known in arthropods and nematodes. Its ability for reproductive manipulation can cause unequal inheritance to male and female offspring, allowing the manipulator to spread, but potentially also impact the evolutionary dynamics of infected hosts.

Preliminary patterns of seasonal changes in species composition of surface‐active arthropods in a South African savannah

open access: yesAustral Ecology, Volume 47, Issue 6, Page 1222-1231, September 2022., 2022
Abstract Surface‐active arthropods have limited dispersal abilities and their abundances are responsive to changes in the environment. Their sensitivity allows for the identification of aspects of environmental variation that are responsible for changes in community assemblages of these arthropods.

Taxonomic Studies on Australian Psammoecus Latreille (Coleoptera, Silvanidae, Brontinae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Taxonomy, 2020
Two new species of Psammoecus Latreille, 1829 from Australia are described: Psammoecus australis sp. nov. and P. venustus sp. nov. A taxonomic revision and diagnoses for other Australian species are provided. Psammoecus obesus Grouvelle, 1919 is recorded

Electrophysiological and behavioural responses of Stegobium paniceum to volatile compounds from Chinese medicinal plant materials

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 78, Issue 8, Page 3697-3703, August 2022., 2022
Four compounds identified from the volatiles of Chinese medicinal plant materials (CMPMs) are perceived by the peripheral olfactory system of S. paniceum adults and are able to individually elicit a positive chemotaxis in S. paniceum adults confirming the role of chemical cues in host‐plant detection and selection of this pest.

The value of hybrid and non‐native ash for the conservation of ash specialists is limited following late stages of emerald ash borer invasion

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 24, Issue 3, Page 355-370, August 2022., 2022
Abstract Widespread mortality of native North American ash caused by emerald ash borer (EAB; Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire) threatens native arthropod biodiversity, but hybrid ash populations with resistance to EAB may serve a role in supporting threatened communities of arthropods in managed landscapes impacted by EAB.

Evaluation of a quasi‐dimeric eugenol derivative as repellent against the stored grain insect pest Sitophilus oryzae (Coleoptera Curculionidae)

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 78, Issue 6, Page 2588-2595, June 2022., 2022
The eugenol derivative showed greater repellence and persistence against the stored grain insect pest Sitophilus oryzae than eugenol but with a less intense smell. Abstract BACKGROUND Essential oils (EOs) and their chemical components are often proposed as an alternative to synthetic pesticides for pest control of foodstuff insect pests. However, their
