Photosynthetic characteristics in genetically modified sense-RbcS silver birch lines
Journal of Plant Physiology, 2010Transgenic silver birch lines carrying extra copies of endogenous small subunit of Rubisco (RbcS)-gene under 35S CaMV promoter were used to study the carbon use efficiency of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth). A five week greenhouse experiment was carried out with four transgenic lines, R3.2, R7.2, E5 and E25, and their corresponding wild types (wt ...

Postglacial recolonization and cpDNA variation of silver birch, Betula pendula
Molecular Ecology, 2002AbstractChloroplast PCR‐RFLP markers were used to reconstruct the history of the silver birch, Betula pendula Roth, in Europe since the last glacial maximum (LGM). In birch, fossil pollen maps do not reveal a clear chronological sequence of postglacial spread.

Water relations in silver birch during springtime: How is sap pressurised?
Plant Biology, 2018AbstractPositive sap pressures are produced in the xylem of birch trees in boreal conditions during the time between the thawing of the soil and bud break. During this period, xylem embolisms accumulated during wintertime are refilled with water. The mechanism for xylem sap pressurization and its environmental drivers are not well known. We measured ...

Phenolic compounds in silver birch (Betula pendula Roth) wood
Holzforschung, 2006Abstract Three new phenolic compounds (4-hydroxy-2-methoxyphenyl-6-O-syringoyl-β-D-glucopyranoside, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl-6-O-syringoyl-β-D-glucopyranoside, and 4-hydroxymethyl-2-methoxyphenyl-6-O-syringoyl-β-D-glucopyranoside) and 15 known phenolic compounds (two phenyl glucoside esters, five lignans, three diarylheptanoids and five ...

Prevention of the flowering of a tree, silver birch
Molecular Breeding, 2004Genetic modification of trees presents great advantages but it is hampered by the possible spread of introduced genes to native populations. However, the spread would be prevented if the modified trees would be sterile. We have previously shown that the induction of sterility by the prevention of flowering is possible in tobacco and Arabidopsis by ...

IoT-Based Air Pollution Monitoring Using Silver Birch Trees
National Academy Science Letters, 2019Air pollution has emerged as a major threat to public health. Due to vehicular pollution and industries, the exposure to toxic particulate matter pollution (PM2.5 and PM10) is alarmingly high in major cities. Silver birch trees are good in absorbing the PM in the air. The characteristics of silver birch trees are briefed in this paper.
