EFFECT OF CADMIUM IONS ON THE GERMINATION OF KARELIAN BIRCH AND SILVER BIRCH SEEDS

open access: yesTransactions of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2020
The effect of cadmium ions (from 10–6 to 10–3 M) on seed germination and early development of seedlings was studied in Karelian birch B. pendula Roth var. carelica (Mercklin) Hämet-Ahti and silver birch Betula pendula Roth.

Curly Birch Society

open access: yesSilva Fennica, 1978
Curly birch, a curly grained variety of birch ( Sok.), has fetched a higher price than any other Finnish tree species on account of its rarity and decorativeness. Curly graininess has been found in Finland in addition to silver birch, also in and Betula

Estimating coarse roots biomass in young silver birch stands on post-agricultural lands in central Poland

open access: yesSilva Fennica, 2013
Study analyses coarse (d>2 mm of diameter) roots biomass dynamics in young succession stands of silver birch ( Roth) growing on abandoned farmlands in central Poland.

Pressure‐Induced Structural and Magnetic Evolution in Layered Antiferromagnet YbMn2Sb2

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
Pressure tunes the delicate balance between structure, magnetism, and electronic states in quantum materials. In YbMn2Sb2, high‐pressure X‐ray and neutron diffraction reveal a trigonal‐to‐monoclinic transition near 3.5 GPa, accompanied by unconventional magnetic ordering.

Soil characteristics under selected broadleaved tree species in East Norway

open access: yesJournal of Forest Science, 2010
Comprehensive analyses of soil properties of sites of native Scandinavian broadleaved tree species were performed in 36 habitats in East Norway. The material consisted of stands of silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.), white birch (Betula pubescens Ehrh.),

Habitat complexity and prey composition shape an apex predator's habitat use across contrasting landscapes

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
The spatial ecology of stalk‐and‐ambush predators like the Eurasian lynx Lynx lynx depends on prey availability and environmental features, yet the relative roles of these factors remain unclear at large spatial scales. In this study, we analysed lynx habitat use across central and southern Finland using snow‐track data from the Wildlife Triangle ...

BIOMASS ALLOCATION, LEAF AND FINE ROOT MORPHOLOGICAL ADAPTATIONS IN YOUNG BLACK ALDER (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.), SILVER BIRCH (Betula pendula Roth.) AND SCOTS PINE (Pinus sylvestris L.)...; pp. 289–303 [PDF]

open access: yesOil Shale, 2014
The biomass allocation, as well as leaf and short root morphological parameters in young (1–7-year-old) black alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.), silver birch (Betula pendula Roth.) and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) plantations on the oil shale ...

Long Shoots in the Crowns of Maturing Silver Birch [PDF]

open access: yes2006 Second International Symposium on Plant Growth Modeling and Applications, 2006
Three dimensional digitizing was used to examine the influence of both neighbouring trees and the target tree structure on the number and length of current long shoots in silver birch growing with different neighbour species. Long shoot length was found to increase from crown bottom to its top, and from high to low branching orders.

EcoViz: a tool for visual analysis and photorealistic rendering of forest landscape model simulations

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Simulation outputs from forest landscape models are complex, and tools for their visual analysis and effective communication are often limited. In this paper, we present EcoViz, a novel, open‐source visualisation platform designed to complement existing forest models by providing advanced 3D visualisation capabilities.

Nutrition Status of Trees on Spoil Heaps After Coal Mining Can Be Inferred From Seasonal Dynamics of Foliar Nutrient Concentrations

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A stable vegetation cover on given habitat conditions can be one of the possible requirements for post‐mining sites, as it can prevent erosion and dustiness of these anthropogenic surfaces and bring several practical future benefits, such as biomass production and microclimate improvement.
