Face-maker : the negotiation between screen performance, extra-filmic persona and conditions of employment within the career of Peter Lorre

open access: yes
Peter Lorre often described his acting as merely "face-making". This disparaging attitude is reflected within critiques which read the life of Peter Lorre as a tragic narrative of wasted opportunities and his career as a screen performer as restricted ...

Towards an anthropology of acquisition: ‘How did you get that?’ Vers une anthropologie de l'acquisition : « Où as‐tu trouvé ça ? »

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Volume 32, Issue 2, Page 620-637, June 2026.
The production‐distribution‐consumption triad has structured how anthropologists understand exchange for roughly a century. This article argues for expanding this triad to include an explicit focus on acquisition – the systems, processes, and practices of acquiring.

Effortful Control and Cortical Brain Structure in 5‐Year‐Old Children: Findings From the FinnBrain Birth Cohort Study

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Neuroscience, Volume 63, Issue 11, June 2026.
The structural correlates of effortful control in typically developing 5‐year‐olds were found in the left supramarginal/superior parietal region and in the right inferior temporal region. The results differed from those seen in older participants in earlier studies.

High‐Accuracy Thin‐Film Stress Sensor Exploiting Integrated Digital Image Correlation

open access: yesStrain, Volume 62, Issue 3, June 2026.
A high‐accuracy Speckle Stress Sensor (SSS) is introduced for real‐time thin‐film stress measurements, combining integrated digital image correlation (IDIC) with dense overlapping spot patterns generated by a simple LED‐perforated plate setup. Unlike conventional multi‐beam optical stress sensors relying on detection of the centers of isolated laser ...

Tamm Plasmon Resonance Responsiveness to SARS‐CoV‐2 Virus‐Like Particles

open access: yesNanophotonics, Volume 15, Issue 10, 27 May 2026.
This work presents a Tamm plasmon device combining a SiO2/TiO2 Bragg reflector and nanostructured silver to detect SARS‐CoV‐2 virus‐like particles through resonance attenuation captured by a displacement angle. Optical characterizations, controls experiments, and mechanistic insights highlight structure‐dependent interactions, and suggest applications ...
