Silvoarable agroforestry (including hedgerows)

2022
Soils play a central role in climate mitigation. They are both as a carbon sink and a source of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). This report outlines the mitigation potential for GHG emissions of climate friendly soil management options at global, EU and German level. It also discusses different types of climate-friendly soil management measures and key

Agroforestry and biodiversity in temperate silvoarable systems

2022
Silvoarable systems (SAS) are agroforestry systems where trees are closely linked to arable cropping, often in alleys (alley cropping systems). They have the potential to provide many agricultural and environmental benefits, are innovative and expanding.

Farmer Perceptions of Silvoarable Systems in Seven European Countries

2008
Between 2003 and 2004, 264 face-to-face interviews were undertaken to determine farmers' perceptions of silvoarable agroforestry across 14 sample areas in seven European countries. Across the 14 sample areas, 40% of respondents had heard the term “agroforestry” and 33% then defined it as an association of trees with crops or livestock.

Distribution of small mammals in a silvoarable agroforestry system in Northern England

Agroforestry Systems, 2005
The importance of agroforestry systems in temperate regions in providing habitat for small mammals has not been investigated. Numbers and densities of small mammals were assessed by live trapping in a complex farming landscape including mature hedgerows, arable fields, areas of trees planted at forestry density (2,500 trees ha–1) and trees in an ...

Relative crop yields of european silvoarable agroforestry systems [PDF]

open access: possible, 2016
Global trends, such as population growth and increased demand for food and energy require rational and efficient land use with ecosystem services provisioning beyond yield. Silvoarable agroforestry (SAF) is a land use system in which crops for food and trees for bioenergy purposes are grown on the same land.

Responses of slug numbers and slug damage to crops in a silvoarable agroforestry landscape

Journal of Applied Ecology, 1998
1.  Alternative farming practices such as set‐aside and agroforestry are likely to be of continuing interest to European agriculture but may have associated problems, such as increased populations of crop pests such as slugs. 2.  A silvoarable agroforestry experiment has been in progress since 1987 at Leeds University Farms at Bramham, West Yorkshire,

A comparison of computer-based models of silvoarable economics

2004

From silvopastoral to silvoarable systems in Europe: sharing concepts, unifying policies.

2005
Silvopastoral and silvoarable systems are often considered separately, with distinct management schemes, research approaches, and policy-making perspectives. However, both are multi-species agroecosystems with a tree component. While the motto in agriculture and forestry has been for decades to reduce complexity for simplifying management and ...
