Gaia: Complex systems prediction for time to adapt to climate shocks
Abstract Earth's climate has undergone significant fluctuations in the geologic past, while the sun's radiation continues to increase, yet has always returned to conditions highly favorable to life. Thus, the biosphere overall appears able to cancel effects of external trends as well as provide negative feedback to internal fluctuations.

Fungal community dissimilarity predicts plant–soil feedback strength in a lowland tropical forest
Abstract Soil microbes impact plant community structure and diversity through plant–soil feedbacks. However, linking the relative abundance of plant pathogens and mutualists to differential plant recruitment remains challenging. Here, we tested for microbial mediation of pairwise feedback using a reciprocal transplant experiment in a lowland tropical ...

An investigation of the Guyana plant Simarouba amara Aubl. (Simaroubaceae) for antineoplastic quassinoids led to isolation and structural determination of the new quassinoids 2'-acetylglaucarubine (1a) and 13,18-dehydroglaucarubinone (2). The previously known 2'-acetylglaucarubinone (3a) and glaucarubinone (3b) were also obtained.

Spatial genetic structure of Simarouba amara Aubl. (Simaroubaceae), a dioecious, animal-dispersed Neotropical tree, on Barro Colorado Island, Panama [PDF]
Simarouba amara (Simaroubaceae) is a vertebrate-dispersed, insect-pollinated Neotropical tree found in lowland moist forest from upper Mesoamerica to the Amazon basin. We assessed the spatial genetic structure of S. amara within the 50-ha Forest Dynamics Plot on Barro Colorado Island in the Republic of Panama.

RESISTÊNCIA AO INTEMPERISMO ARTIFICIAL DE QUATRO MADEIRAS TROPICAIS: O EFEITO DOS EXTRATIVOS
The tropical woods Apuleia leiocarpa, Couratari stellata, Mezilaurus itauba and Simarouba amara were selected to examine the effect of the presence of the extractives in the color variation and in the photodecomposition process of their surfaces. Samples
