Tidal phasing drives intertidal heat stress and climate vulnerability
Abstract Intertidal organisms are exposed to extreme and variable thermal conditions due to periodic aerial exposure by tides. For sessile species that cannot seek refuge, heat stress is strongly influenced by the timing of low tides, which in semidiurnal tidal systems is governed by the spring–neap tidal cycle.

Convex approximations for a class of mixed-integer recourse models [PDF]
We consider mixed-integer recourse (MIR) models with a single recourse constraint. We relate the second-stage value function of such problems to the expected simple integer recourse (SIR) shortage function.

We compare simulated annealing (SA, Marxan) and integer linear programming (ILP, prioritizr) to evaluate their performance in developing spatial conservation priorities for the proposed Weddell Sea Marine Protected Area Phase 1. While both approaches identify largely overlapping priority areas, ILP consistently produces more compact and cost‐efficient ...

Abstract In the last decade, explainability has been attracting much attention in the machine learning community. However, this research topic extends beyond this field to encompass others such as operations research and combinatorial optimization (CO).

On multiple simple recourse models [PDF]
We consider multiple simple recourse (MSR) models, both continuous and integer versions, which generalize the corresponding simple recourse (SR) models by allowing for a refined penalty cost structure for individual shortages and surpluses.

ABSTRACT Flexibility is a crucial characteristic of industrial systems that face increasing volatilities and is therefore essential to ensure feasible operation under uncertainty. Flexibility is often closely tied to the design of a system, and careful consideration must be taken to understand the trade‐off between design cost and operational ...

Convex approximations for complete integer recourse models [PDF]
We consider convex approximations of the expected value function of a two-stage integer recourse problem. The convex approximations are obtained by perturbing the distribution of the random right-hand side vector.

ABSTRACT Recent tsunamigenic earthquakes in Japan have highlighted the emerging fire hazard triggered by tsunami inundation and its impact on tsunami vertical evacuation (TVE) structures. This new type of fire following earthquake, referred to as “tsunami fires,” may be a potential universal hazard that tsunami‐prone countries face; however, it has not

Simple Integer Recourse Models
We consider the objective function of a simple recourse problem with fixed technology matrix and integer second-stage variables. Separability due to the simple recourse structure allows to study a one-dimensional version instead.Based on an explicit formula for the objective function, we derive a complete description of the class of probability density
