Simple Shear in Granular Media
Applied Mechanics Reviews, 1997The ring shear box is analyzed using an isotropic strain hardening/softening model for granular media, permitting an estimate to be made of the stresses developed under conditions of simple shear, at the critical void ratio. Observation of the radial stress on the inner or outer walls of the test chamber would provide a measure of the relative value of

A simple construction for shear stress
Journal of Structural Geology, 1989On a plane of given orientation, the direction of resolved shear stress (τ) is controlled by the orientation of the principal stress axes and by the ratio of principal stress differences. A simple stereographic construction is presented for the determination of the direction of τ.

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1988
Abstract A new simple shear device capable of measuring a complete set of stresses during simple shear deformation is described. This simple shear device tests a cuboidal specimen whose lateral sides are surrounded by a rubber membrane reinforced by a stack of Teflon® coated aluminum plates.

A simple shear machine for soil
2011The new shear machine enforces more uniform deformations than the conventional triaxial test. A low compliance pore pressure measuring device is an integral part of the machine. The machine described is capable of applying cyclic normal stress up to 1000 lb. per sq. in. and alternating cyclic shear stress up to ± 500 lb. per sq. in. Static loads can be

Equivalent Modons in Simple Shear
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1986Abstract We use a perturbation technique to construct modon solutions that are valid in the presence of weak, linear north-south shear to help assess the application of modons to atmospheric blocking. The model equation is equivalent barotropic and describes the quasi-geostrophic motion in the thin upper layer of a two-layer system in which the lower ...
