Reanalysis of simple shear soil testing

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1976
Simple shear devices are used fairly extensively in soil mechanics research, lately especially in connection with cyclic testing. This presentation starts out by extending existing isotropic, elastic analyses of stresses and strains in the simple shear test.

Simple shear tests with a varying shearing direction during cyclic shearing

Géotechnique Letters, 2014
Tests with cyclic lateral loading on a pile have shown that the pile reacts to a change of loading direction with increasing accumulation of lateral displacements. This phenomenon is known as ‘pile drift’. To investigate this behaviour at small scale under laboratory conditions, a specifically designed simple shear apparatus with two shearing axes was

Sand-Nonwoven geotextile interfaces shear strength by direct shear and simple shear tests

Geomechanics and Engineering, 2015
Soil-reinforcement interaction mechanism is an important issue in the design of geosynthetic reinforced soil structures. This mechanism depends on the soil properties, reinforcement characteristics and interaction between these two elements (soil and reinforcement).

Damping at Small Strains in Cyclic Simple Shear Test

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 1998
Cyclic tests were conducted to study damping properties of two reconstituted sands and three laboratory-made clays at small cyclic shear strain amplitudes of approximately 0.001-0.04%, employing a recently developed constant-volume equivalent-undrained direct simple shear device for small-strain testing.

Simple shear creep tests on frozen soils

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1981
Direct simple shear tests have been conducted on a variety of reconstituted frozen soils and on ice in order to investigate the load transfer process associated with the adfreeze bond to piles, and to obtain creep properties of frozen soils. The test develops uniform shear strain between plates of different roughnesses provided the applied shear ...

Drained Liquefaction Testing in Simple Shear

Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1973
This note examines simple shear liquefaction in a pseudo-drained state. Advantages and disadvantages of the testing procedure are discussed. Conclusions and recommendations are presented.

Sand Liquefaction in Triaxial and Simple Shear Tests

Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1971
Data from cyclic loading simple shear and triaxial tests indicate that the important variable controlling the incidence of liquefaction in a given number of cycles in a saturated sand at a particular void ratio is the initial effective stress ratio; the ratio of the peak alternating shear stress to the initial effective mean normal stress.

Specimen Size Effect in Simple Shear Test

Journal of the Geotechnical Engineering Division, 1982
This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation of the influences of height to diameter ratio and membrane stiffness on the behavior of clay in the NGI simple shear apparatus. The study included 21 strain-controlled, constant volume, monotonic loading, (static) tests on undisturbed specimens of medium-stiff clay. The clay was sampled in a

Measurement of soil strength in simple shear tests

Canadian Geotechnical Journal, 1991
During a simple shear test the axes of stress rotate and, in a conventional apparatus in which the only stresses measured are the normal and shear stresses on horizontal planes, it is not possible to define the stress state completely. As a result, the measured failure stresses may not represent the true strength of the soil.

Stress Conditions in NGI Simple Shear Test

Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division, 1972
This technical note describes the results of the three-dimensional analysis in the elastic range of deformations for an undrained test and presents answers to two questions: What is the state of stress in the sample; and how extensive are the zones in which the shear differs from the average value?
