Development of a Multidirectional Simple Shear Testing Device

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 2013
Abstract A new simple shear testing device capable of applying multidirectional loading to soil specimens has been developed. The Texas A&M University multidirectional simple shear (TAMU-MDSS) device provides the ability to apply a large range of shear stresses and complex loading paths, such as figure-eight and circular patterns, to

On Comparing Simple Shear and Triaxial Test Results

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1984
It is indisputable that nonuniformities of stresses and strains exist in soils tested not only in the simple shear apparatus (SSA) but in the triaxial apparatus as well. These nonuniformities alone cannot explain the differences observed from the results of soils tests in the SSA and the triaxial apparatus.

An evaluation of direct simple shear tests on clay

Géotechnique, 1987
Normally consolidated samples of kaolin have been tested in two direct simple shear apparatuses. The first apparatus is specially instrumented with load cells in the horizontal boundaries to investigate the uniformity of the stresses acting on the samples. The internal deformations and strains are determined using radiographic techniques.

Cyclic Simple Shear Testing of Granular Materials

Geotechnical Testing Journal, 1986
Abstract Developments to a pneumatically operated simple shear apparatus for dry granular materials allowing application of cyclic shear and normal stresses are described. Boundary transducers were of only limited success for stress measurement so a prediction method for complete description of the stress state was used. Tests on uniform

Simple Shear Tests on Clays

2019
This study evaluated the existing Berkeley type simple shear apparatus at the University of Sydney which had not been used for some time because of the failure of the old PC controller. During the course of working on the apparatus modifications to some mechanical parts, corrections to the software subroutines, and a comprehensive experimental ...

A Simple Shear Test for Saturated Cohesive Soils

1966
A simple torsional vane shear device has been developed which provides a reliable and rapid measure of the shear strength of saturated cohesive soils. This device can be used both in the field and in the laboratory. It is lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to use.

A Micromechanical Investigation of Drained Simple Shear Tests

2011
This paper describes a study of the simple shear apparatus that was carried out using the discrete element method (DEM). Two testing configurations were considered, in the first instance the lateral walls were taken to be rigid and they rotated during shearing, while the second configuration simulated laminar sidewalls.
