Family Simuliidae The Simuliidae, or black flies, are significant pests of humans and wildlife. Swarms of black flies are prohibitive to outdoor recreation because the flies bite and annoy people. Although the economic impact of black flies in the Park is unknown, the damage to local recreation­dependent businesses could be significant.
