Neutron diffraction by magnetic single crystals

The fundamental equations for the dynamical neutron diffraction including magnetic interaction are developed. Using the close analogy to dynamical X-ray diffraction, the expression for the ratio of reflected-to-incident intensity in the symmetrical Bragg case is derived. Explicit results for a Gd crystal are presented.

Microfurnace for single-crystal diffraction measurements

A new furnace design, based on the air-flow principle, is described. The furnace can operate to 400°C with a stability of ± 0.25°C for long time periods, gives access to about 91% of reciprocal space, and mounts on a standard goniometer head. The power consumption at 200°C is 26 W, at 400°C is 40 W. Higher temperatures are attainable.

Single crystal diffraction pattern of germanium

The diffraction pattern for the (111)-reflection of germanium was measured by means of the three-crystal arrangement and compared with dynamical theory. The results obtained indicate the possibility of using germanium crystals for precise measurements in X-ray spectroscopy.

Some selected area electron diffraction patterns of isolated monocrystalline particles of both Wyoming and Camp Berteaux sodium-monfmorillonites fail to show the mirror plane symmetry required for the accepted structure. A triclinic model deserves consideration.

Rectangular-profile diffraction grating from single-crystal silicon

Diffraction gratings having well-shaped rectangular profiles were fabricated by chemical etching of single-crystal silicon oriented in the ?110? direction. The grooves were 2.62 microm deep, 5.4 microm wide, and were separated by 10.2 microm. The diffraction behavior was measured near normal incidence using several laser wave-lengths.
